“…Anti-T. cruzi polyclonal antibody used in the present study may cross-react with other parasites and should therefore be used in close correlation with the clinical and laboratory data of the patient as well as obvious morphological correspondence to the histopathological examination in HE. Cross-reaction with antigens of leishmaniasis was also observed by Barbosa et al 37 using another antiserum against T. cruzi. Thus, it is recommended to use this method with large number of leishmaniasis cases to better understand the results and possible cross-reaction.…”

“…In the early 1900s when Carlos Chagas ®rst identi®ed patients harbouring T. cruzi, bloodstream trypomastigotes, reports already appeared (Chagas 1909(Chagas , 1911Vianna 1911;Torres 1917) of amastigotes within brain mononuclear cells and heart muscle ®bres among other target organs. Since then, several investigators have described in detail the role of the parasite in the development of the disease, mainly using immunohistological (Barbosa et al 1991;Milei et al 1992;Higuchi et al 1993a) and electron microscopic (Andrade 1991;Milei et al 1992;Andrade et al 1994) tools. More recently, the value of immuno¯uo-rescence as a diagnostic aid in histopathology tests of Chagas' disease has been reported (Chandler and Watts 1988).…”
