Show more

“…Acute phase -The histological lesions observed in heart, digestive tract and skeletal muscle of the acute chagasic rabbits were qualitatively similar to that found in humans (Lopes et al 1987) and in other experimental models (Andrade & Andrade 1979, Beraldo 1987, Chapadeiro et al 1988, Bonecini-Almeida et al 1990, Ramirez et al 1991, although generally milder and scarcer mainly in the digestive tract and in the skeletal muscles.…”

“…Increased mast cell count has also been found in the submucosa and especially the musculature of the small and large intestines of mice chronically infected with the ABC strain of T. cruzi 14 . Chapadeiro et al 9 reported that, in albino Wistar rats infected experimentally with T. cruzi, mast cells were absent or rare in the infected animals in the acute phase.…”

“…All regions of the hearts were examined by two blinded observers. The inflammatory infiltration and parasite nests were characterized using a semiquantitative approach and the scoring system described by Chapadeiro et al [33]. A global myocardial inflammation score was defined for each animal as the sum of the scores from different regions of the heart.…”
