The objective of this study is to report on the colonization of palm trees by Rhodnius neglectus, its invasion in an urban area, in Araçatuba - São Paulo, and the control and surveillance measures that have been put in place. Domiciliary triatomine searches occurred in apartments upon the inhabitants' notification. The collected insects were identified and examined for natural infection and food sources with a precipitin test. To search the palm trees, tarps were used to cover the floor, and a “Munck” truck equipped with a tree-pruning device was utilized. Chemical control was performed with the utilization of a manual compression. In 2009, 81 specimens of Rhodnius neglectus were collected from the domiciles by the population. The precipitin test revealed a presence of human blood in 2.7% of the samples. Entomological studies were carried out in these domiciles and in those located within a radius of 200 meters. The search performed in the palm trees resulted in the capture of 882 specimens of triatomines, negative for tripanosomatids. Mechanical and chemical controls were carried out. New searches conducted in the palm trees in the same year resulted in the capture of six specimens. The mechanical and chemical controls of the palm trees, together with the population's work, proved to be effective, therefore preventing these insects' colonization of the city's domiciles.

Resumo Objetivou-se descrever os principais indicadores entomológicos relacionados aos triatomíneos na mesorregião Oeste do Rio Grande do Norte. Trata-se de estudo descritivo, transversal e retrospectivo, desenvolvido com base em análise histórica de informações sobre a captura de triatomíneos realizada pelo Programa de Controle de doença de Chagas, no período de 2008 a 2013. Foram capturadas cinco espécies, das quais se destacaram a Triatoma brasiliensis e a Triatoma pseudomaculata, pela ocupação do ambiente domiciliar e peridomiciliar, sequencialmente, e a Panstrongylus lutzi, pelo maior índice de infecção natural. Observou-se prevalência de ninfas dentre os exemplares capturados, maior densidade triatomínica no peridomicílio, índices de infestação, colonização e infecção natural de 5,6%, 49,6% e 0,8%, respectivamente, diferença significativa na distribuição de espécimes entre os municípios investigados e ausência de declínio dos índices de infestação e colonização entre os anos de 2009 e 2012. Os achados sugerem a necessidade de vigilância contínua, possibilitada pela associação entre as equipes de campo e as comunidades, com ênfase na proposta de educação em saúde para o reconhecimento e notificação dos triatomíneos pela população.

Prevalence of triatomines and their infection by Trypanosoma cruzi, were studied during 1974-1981, in the Administrative Region of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. This investigation was continued (1982-1986), blood meal tests with bird, marsupial, rodent and human antisera having been added. Panstrongylus megistus, predominant in the region, whose winged instars are often found infected by T. cruzi in inhabited houses, displayed and alimentary eclecticism. From a sample of 7,785, 14.78 percent reacted positively with human antisera. A similar, but less marked behaviour was observed in Rhodnius neglectus. Triatoma sordida, the second most important species in the Region, was neither demonstrated to be feeding on humans nor to be infected by T. cruzi. Changes in their natural habitat probably caused sharp rises in T. arthurneivai populations in the human dwellings. The capture of three specimens of Microtriatoma borbai marks the first occurrence of this species in the State São Paulo. "Focus investigation" in areas in the surveillance phase can detect triatomines in the process of domiciliation.
