DETECTION OF Leptospira spp. AND Brucella abortus ANTIBODIES IN FREE-LIVING JAGUARS (Panthera onca) IN TWO PROTECTED AREAS OF NORTHERN PANTANAL, BRAZIL

Abstract: This study aimed to assess the exposure of free-living jaguars (Panthera onca) to Leptospira spp. and Brucella abortus in two conservation units in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The presence of antibodies in blood samples of eleven jaguars was investigated using autochthonous antigens isolated in Brazil added to reference antigen collection applied to diagnosis of leptospirosis by Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). The Rose Bengal test was applied for B. abortus antibodies. Two (18.2%) jaguars were s… Show more

“…The most prevalent serovar found in the Pantanal was the same diagnosed by Nava [ 37 ] in free-ranging jaguars in the Atlantic Forest (serovar Pomona). The serovar Hardjo was previously reported in jaguars kept in captivity [ 40 , 41 ] and the sevorar Canicola in free-ranging jaguars [ 42 ], both from Brazil.…”

“…Captures were performed through the use of Aldridge spring-activated foot snares ( de la Torre et al 2017b ) set on known trails used more frequently for the target individuals or around carcasses, usually cattle (killed or just consumed opportunistically by jaguars). Jaguars were anesthetized with a combination of tiletamine–zolazepam intramuscularly by CO 2 rifle dart ( Onuma et al 2015 ; May-Junior et al 2021 ). Capture procedures were approved by National Research Center for Carnivores Conservation——ICMBio/CENAP under license numbers No.…”

“…The captures occurred between October 2011 and June 2020. Once contained in the trap, they were sedated with a 5 mg/kg combination of tiletamine-zolazepam intramuscularly (Poole et al, 1993;Onuma et al, 2015) by CO 2 rifle dart in order to place the GPS collar and to collect biological material and biometric information.…”
