IDENTIFICATION OF Leishmania infantum IN PUERTO IGUAZÚ, MISIONES, ARGENTINA

Abstract: The emergence of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) in Latin America is a growing public health problem. The urbanization of ZVL has been observed in different countries around the world, and there are a growing number of reports drawing attention to the emergence of this infection in new locations, as well as its increase in previously established areas of endemicity. In the city of Posadas, Misiones province, Northeastern Argentina, the transmission of ZVL associated with canines and Lutzomyia longipalpis… Show more

“…On the Argentina border of Foz do Iguaçu, in the city of Puerto Iguazú, the presence of the vector Lu. longipalpis was verified in a study conducted in 2010 (SALOMÓN et al, 2011), and in 2013, the DNA presence of L. infantum was confirmed in samples of dogs from this city (ACOSTA et al, 2015).…”

“…Environmental degradation, migratory flows and unplanned urban occupation favor the adaptation of vectors in the environment (SILVA et al, 2015). Acosta et al (2015) reported that VL in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina was established due to changes in the urbanization of the vector and the existence of reservoirs (dogs) and vectors (Lu. longipalpis).…”

“…The first autochthonous case of HVL in an Argentinean city concomitant with CVL cases were reported in 2006, also on the border with Paraguay, but 300 km away from the former focus [11]. In 2010, CVL vector and cases were found in Puerto Iguazú on the three-country border with Paraguay and Brazil, 300 km from the other two foci, as in an apex of an equilateral triangle [12], and CVL and HVL were reported since 2013–2014 [13]. Cases of HVL in the Paraguayan side of the border were known previously since 2008 [14], and the vector in the Brazilian side appeared in 2012 [15].…”

“…A mucocutaneous (MCL) form of the disease has also been described, which develops as a late reaction to previously untreated cutaneous lesions and may affect nasal cavities, the septum and the palate [ 2 , 3 ]. Urbanization of the leishmaniases has been recorded, particularly regarding the visceral form caused by Leishmania infantum [ 4 , 5 , 6 ] as well as variation in species’ spatial distribution and vector-parasite interactions [ 7 , 8 ].…”
