Abstract: Sandflies transmit pathogens of leishmaniasis. The natural infection of sandflies by Leishmania (Viannia) was assessed in municipalities, in the state of Paraná, in Southern Brazil. Sandflies were collected with Falcão and Shannon traps. After dissection in search of flagellates in digestive tubes and identification of the species, female sandflies were submitted to the Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (multiplex PCR) for detection of the fragment of the kDNA of Leishmania (Viannia) and the fragment from th… Show more

“…The high number of phlebotomine sandflies in areas of altered native forest in the Ivaí-Pirapó area [ 3 , 26 28 ] may partially explain the persistence of the high-high cluster throughout the duration of the study period. Interestingly, the sandfly species Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto), Nyssomyia whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho), and Migonemyia migonei (França) were identified as Leishmania vectors [ 3 , 29 , 30 ], which are widely distributed in the state of Paraná [ 31 ]. In 2003, the high-high association covered all CL production areas in Paraná, with the exception of the Lower Iguaçu area.…”

“…The recommended target for sand flies is the cacophony (cac) gene, which codes for subunit alpha-1 of a voltage-dependent calcium channel and is related to the control of the sound emitted by the wings of males during courtship . Amplification of this target sequence indicates the presence of sand fly DNA, and has been used by several authors as an endogenous control in PCR (Cova et al, 2015;Lins et al, 2002;Neitzke-Abreu et al, 2014;Saraiva et al, 2010;Pita-Pereira et al, 2011).…”

“…migonei have already been found to be naturally infected by Leishmania spp. in Paraná State 28 , 35 and other Brazilian States 15 , 16 , 36 - 44 . Despite the low levels of sand flies collected when compared to studies carried out in Northern Paraná State 16 , 26 - 29 , the importance of this study lies in the observations that could be made, as in the same locality wild animals where captured, possibly representing Leishmania reservoirs and sand flies as well as dogs were examined.…”
