Seroprevalence of human toxocariasis in Andean communities from the Northeast of Lima, Peru

Abstract: SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of human toxocariasis in three Andean communities from the Northeast of Lima, Peru. A total of 303 subjects including children and adults were studied and blood samples were collected to detect anti-Toxocara antibodies by ELISA-IgG test and by hematological examination; stool samples were collected also for parasitological examination. The overall seroprevalence of toxocariasis observed in the total population was 20.46%, with a significant high pro… Show more

“…However, this result is slightly lower than that reported by Antonios et al (2008), Espinoza et al (2010). The prevalence of helminthes was higher in soil than stools samples while the prevalence of Protozoa was higher in stool than soil samples in urban area and the difference was very highly significant (P \ 0.001) Difference in prevalence could be as a result of difference in selected target population or the used diagnostic techniques of toxocariasis.…”

“…However, in an international context, the seroprevalence in waste pickers is lower than those reported in some South American countries. Toxocara seroprevalences ranging from 21% to 39% have been reported in rural and urban populations in Bolivia [12], Brazil [13], Argentina [14][16], and Peru [17], [18]. In contrast, the seroprevalence in waste pickers is higher than the Toxocara seroprevalences less than 5% reported in Canada [19], [20].…”

“…These nematodes develop the adult stage in the intestines of cats and dogs, where each female produces 200 000 eggs per day. These eggs are eliminated from the body and become infecting after [2][3][4][5] weeks. After being ingested by humans, the larvae go through the intestinal wall, migrating via the veins into the liver and the rest of the body, where they remain as larvae [1] .…”

“…The overall seroprevalence observed in the total population of Andrean communities from Northeast of Lima, Peru was 20.46% [3], whereas in Amazonian city of Yurimaguas, Peru it was 35.66% [5], with a significant high proportion in children.…”
