Abstract: SUMMARYMayaro virus (MAYV) is an arbovirus (Togaviridae: Alphavirus) enzootic in tropical South America and maintained in a sylvan cycle involving wild vertebrates and Haemagogus mosquitoes. MAYV cases occur sporadically in persons with a history of recent activities inside or around forests. This paper reports three cases of MAYV fever detected in men infected in Camapuã, MS, Brazil. Serum samples collected at four days and two months after the onset of the symptoms and examined by hemagglutination inhibition… Show more

“…Despite our negative results, the serologic evidence of MAYV infection in Indians (Neel et al 1968) and an outbreak registered (Vasconcelos et al 1998) in the two neighboring states associated with the report of three cases of MAYV fever in men infected in MS (Coimbra et al 2007) are evidence of MAYV circulation in the Central-West region of Brazil. Moreover, MAYV was detected in migratory birds in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (MS 2003) and six of these avian species were already observed in South Pantanal (Nunes & Tomas 2004).…”

“…Evidence of MAYV migration to other parts of Brazil has also been reported. In 2000, 3 patients who had Mayaro fever and most likely acquired it in Camapuã City, located in the Center-West of the country, traveled to the City of São Paulo, where they were diagnosed 36 . In addition, antibodies to MAYV have been observed in 2 birds captured in the State of Rio Grande do Sul in the south of Brazil and far away from the Amazon region (Araujo AA, Ministry of Health: personal communication, 2005).…”

“…MAYV and CHIKV could also be transmitted by Aedes aegypti. Therefore, it is possible to imagine a future scenario in which MAYV, after adaptation to an urban cycle, causes major epidemics 2,36 .…”

“…Todos los síntomas duran entre dos y cinco días, con excepción de la artralgia, la cual es la característica más prominente y diagnóstica de la enfermedad (33,75). La artralgia, que puede durar hasta dos meses y es capaz de generar incapacidad, afecta principalmente a las articulaciones y la unión de los tendones en las muñecas, tobillos, codos, rodillas y dedos (11,21,33,69,75,76). El mal de Mayaro se considera una enfermedad febril benigna y de resolución espontánea con síntomas subletales.…”
