Abstract: SUMMARYCryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast, etiological agent of cryptococcosis. The species is commonly associated with pigeon droppings and plant materials. The aim of the present work was to verify the presence of the yeast in pigeon droppings, and to identify the isolates obtained in serotypes and mating types (MAT). Ten samples of pigeon droppings were collected in the rural area of the city of Alfenas, Brazil. Samples were inoculated in agar Niger medium for fungal isolation and 22 isolates … Show more

“…Assays can be coupled with real-time PCR (343). Multiplex PCR has also been used to determine matingtype profiles through the amplification of STE (sterile) gene sequences of C. neoformans, although there are no similar reports for C. gattii (344,345). Leal et al described a multiplex PCR protocol based on amplification of the ITS region with species-specific primers.…”

“…Routine clinical diagnosis of cryptococcosis is based on culture and detection of a capsular antigen, with varied sensitivity and specificity (39,40). However, molecular methods based on PCR and new technologies for antigen detection also have been described in recent years, although validation of these methods is pending (41)(42)(43)(44).…”

“…Only a few Brazilian studies have investigated the molecular types of environmental Cryptococcus 1,2,3,22,24,28,35 . The distribution of molecular types using the specific primer M13 shows the predominance of VNI (serotype A) in surveyed regions.…”
