Molecular analysis of the dengue virus type 1 and 2 in Brazil based on sequences of the genomic envelope-nonstructural protein 1 junction region

Abstract: The genomic sequences of the Envelope-Non-Structural protein 1 junction region (E/NS1) of 84 DEN-1 and 22 DEN-2 isolates from Brazil were determined. Most of these strains were isolated in the period from 1995 to 2001 in endemic and regions of recent dengue transmission in São Paulo State. Sequence data for DEN-1 and DEN-2 utilized in phylogenetic and split decomposition analyses also include sequences deposited in GenBank from different regions of Brazil and of the world. Phylogenetic analyses were done using… Show more

“…aegypti reinfestation in the state of São Paulo was detected in 1985 [54] and the first dengue epidemic occurred in 1990 and 1991, with the circulation of DENV-1 [21]. DENV-2, 3 and 4 were introduced respectively in 1998, 2002 [55] and 2011 [36]. Despite the infestation by the vector in Sao Paulo have been detected only in the 1980s and the first epidemic of dengue have occurred in the early 1990s, the state has had high incidences of dengue and deaths.…”

“…Subsequent DENV introductions occurred in 1997 and 2002, when DENV-2 and DENV-3 caused huge epidemics, with an increasing number of mild and severe cases 16,36,38 .…”

“…Sallum’s scientific work includes taxonomic studies of diverse groups of Anophelinae and Culicinae, descriptions of new species, reviews, phylogenetic studies with morphological and molecular approach, including the characterization of the mitochondrial genome of multiple species of Anophelinae 29 , 30 and the genus Culex 31 . Other research approaches by Sallum and collaborators include aspects of the epidemiology and ecology of malaria, anopheline biology, ecology and behavior of culicids, list of species present in remote areas of the Brazilian Amazon, molecular characterization of the yellow fever virus 32 , dengue 33 and Saint Louis 34 , incrimination of Haemagogus leucocelaenus (Dyar, 1925) and Aedes serratus (Theobald, 1901) as vectors of the Yellow Fever virus in Rio Grande do Sul in 2008 35 . Investigations into environmental changes that include both degradation and disturbance of the Amazon rainforest and occurrence of malaria are important contributions, as they evidenced factors that act on vector mosquitoes and the occurrence of the disease.…”
