Abstract: SUMMARYAmerican Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is endemic in the province of Tucumán since 1916 where the first Argentinian case of leishmaniasis was reported. An epidemic outbreak took place in the province during 1986-1988, after that the number of cases increased gradually again between 1991-1996. Since October of 1999 sand flies captures were performed at different places associated with current and past transmission or sites identified as risky ones. The collections were carried out with CDC mini light trap an… Show more

“…neivai is the principal species incriminated in the transmission of CL in northwest Argentina (Salomón et al , 2006a The relative abundance of Lu. neivai was similar to that reported previously in Tucumán (Córdoba-Lanús & Salomón 2002). There is a strong association between deforestation and the risk of transmission in the region as the result of the "border effect"; even small modifications in the landscape have led to an increase in Lu.…”

Other studies have used Shannon traps as a method to capture sandflies in Peru (Pérez et al ., ; Pérez & Ogusuku, ), Colombia (Vivero et al ., ; Posada‐López et al ., ), Brazil (Silveira et al ., ; Calvo‐Alessi et al ., ) and Argentina (Córdoba‐Lanús & Salomón, ; Salomón et al ., ).…”

“…In the study area, Salomón et al (2006) determined the spatial and temporal distribution of risk and the regional epidemiological trends of tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL), a type of Leishmania which is endemic of the Yungas of Argentina. The data presented here in addition to other studies carried out in the area (Veggiani Aybar et al, 2010b; Veggiani Aybar et al, 2012; Veggiani-Aybar, 2015) represent a starting point for continuing with the study of this genus in areas where its distribution matches that of the family Psychodidae, the main vectors of this parasite in the region (Córdoba Lanús & Salomón, 2002; Salomón et al, 2006; Quintana, Fernández & Salomón, 2012). …”
