“…The low seroprevalence of IgG antibodies in the Novo Progresso, Trairão and Guarantã do Norte (ranging from 2.16-4.75%) is in accordance with the data from Brazilian HPS cases (Holmes et al 2000, MS/SVS 2009, while in Marcelândia, the seroprevalence was similar to that observed in the Amazon area of MA (Mendes et al 2001(Mendes et al , 2010, as well as in Chile (Castillo et al 2002) and Paraguay (Ferrer et al 1998).…”

Similar to that previously reported, all were involved in the practice of storing food in barns and sheds 31 . The infection probably occurred close to home or during manual work planting corn in a place abundant with rodents; this is due to both the wider choice of food during planting and the provision of natural forest and Araucaria pines 13 .…”

“…We suggest Araraquara and Juquitiba as possible viruses circulating in this study area, based on the geographical distribution of these viruses and the assumption that no other strain is in circulation. However, the possibility of an unknown hantavirus or one not yet reported in Brazil 31,32 , or even a hantavirus previously reported in Argentina, given the proximity of this region with the neighboring country, cannot be discarded.…”

“…In this scenario, immediate set up of ventilator support and administration of fluids and vasoactive drugs should be performed. Differential diagnosis with bacterial infections, especially pneumonia, along with the severity of HPS, have made the empiric prescription of antibiotics very frequent; another drug schedule often reported in case studies is the administration of corticosteroids [7,[40][41][42].…”
