Paracoccidioides brasiliensis: A MYCOLOGIC AND IMMUNOCHEMICAL STUDY OF TWO STRAINS

Abstract: The authors conducted a mycologic, immunochemical and molecular biology study on two strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, one of them, called IBIA, isolated from soil in the municipality of IBIA (Minas Gerais) by Silva-Vergara et al. (1996, 1998), and the other, BAT, cultivated from a human case of paracoccidioidomycosis in Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo/Brazil) by Freitas Da Silva (1996). Both strains showed cotton-like (M) and yeast-like (Y) forms and were pathogenic for testicularly inoculated guinea pigs, … Show more

“…Yeasts are multinucleated and of varying sizes (4 to 50 µm), and they have a spherical, oval, or elongated shape and multiple buds. When yeasts are cultured in solid medium, they present elevated colonies with irregular borders, cerebriform appearance, and cream coloring, becoming darkened with ageing [53].…”

“…Na última avaliação, seis pacientes haviam morr i d o (46,1%), um não foi encontrado e seis foram avaliados de acordo com a escala de seguimento de Karn o f s k y, sendo dois (15,4%)com 100 e quatro (30 como Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Fig 5). O term o blastomicose sul-americana não é apropriado, pois a moléstia não se restringe à América do Sul e pode levar a confusão na literatura mundial com a blastomicose (outra doença (Fig 6).…”

“…Some phenotypic characteristics of BAT isolate were evaluated. Micromorphological aspects, virulence for guinea pig, and serological reaction of BAT-isolate exoantigen with rabbit anti GP43 serum were typical traits of P. brasiliensis strains (Lacaz CS et al, 1999). Compared to other P. brasiliensis isolates, BAT isolate had high exoantigen production, which was recognized by sera from patients with PCM in southeastern Brazil (Silva-Vergara et al, 1998;Panunto-Castelo et al, 2003).…”
