VALIDATION OF 14C-UREA BREATH TEST FOR DIAGNOSIS OF Helicobacter pylori

Abstract: The aim of this study was to validate the 14C-urea breath test for use in diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection. Thirty H. pylori positive patients, based on histologic test and thirty H. pylori negative patients by histology and anti-H. pylori IgG entered the study. Fasting patients drank 5 uCi of 14C-urea in 20 ml of water. Breath samples were collected at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min. The difference of cpm values between the two groups was significant at all the time intervals, besides time 0 (p < 0.000… Show more

“…Even though the radiation exposure from 14 C-urea breath test is less than 1% of that received from an upper gastrointestinal series 22 , the cost of a β counter is low, and the test has 100% specificity and sensitivity 23 , the long half life (5.730 years) 3 of 14 C restricts its use due to the environmental protection policy. That means 13 C-urea breath test and the stool antigen test are the only choices of non-invasive methods for H. pylori-infection eradication control.…”

“…Non-invasive methods, 14 C-urea breath test ( 14 C-UBT) 22,23 and 13 C urea breath test ( 13 C-UBT), are considered gold standard 19 . Recently, a noninvasive diagnostic test based on the detection of H. pylori stool antigen has been developed.…”

“…14 C‐urea breath test was performed for H. pylori recurrence diagnosis according to technique previously described [18]. Patients with positive breath test were submitted to an upper digestive tract endoscopy for ulcer healing evaluation and H. pylori identification.…”

“…Helicobacter pylori infection is highly prevalent worldwide; its incidence rate varies in accordance with the geographical region studied and the age and socioeconomic conditions of infected individuals (21,33,40) . Around 50% of the population worldwide is estimated to be infected (6) ; however, only a small percentage of colonized individuals will develop a pathology related to the infection; for example, only 10%-20% will develop a gastric and/or duodenal ulcer (15) .…”
