IgM and IgA Antibody Responses in 12 Cases of Human Acquired Toxoplasmosis

Abstract: The persistence, in some subjects, of specific IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii for several months after the acute phase of infection has complicated the interpretation of serological test results for toxoplasmosis. Several reports have emphasized the value of the detection of Toxoplasma-specific IgA antibodies for the diagnosis of acute toxoplasmosis. In this article, we report the follow-up profiles of Toxoplasma-specific IgM and IgA antibodies in serum samples obtained from 12 patients at various interva… Show more

“…Development of more sensitive and discriminative techniques are needed to clear the immunologic status of individuals infected with T. gondii. At the present time, IgM antibody is not considered as a reliable marker of early infection, since several studies have demonstrated persistence of IgM antibodies for long time 22,32 .…”

“…At this cut-off value, signi®cant levels of IgA were detected for 1 year after the beginning of clinical manifestations. IgA levels < 40 AU=ml with the ETI-TOXOK-A kit do not exclude a recent infection, as in some patients such levels can be reached very soon after infection with T. gondii [34]. Decoster et al [35] reported no signi®cant differences in the sensitivities and speci®cities of the Platelia IgA and the IMx Toxo IgA kits for the diagnosis of acquired toxoplasmosis.…”

“…Anti-T. gondii IgA was measured by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using Platelia TM Toxo IgA kits (Bio-Rad, France). IIF was done as previously described 9 , and titers ≥ 32 were considered positive. ELFA and ELISA were performed according to the manufacturers' instructions.…”
