Abstract: Sixteen patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus were submitted to nutritional evaluation. Ten had the localized form of the disease (Group G1) and six the disseminated form (Group G2). The patients were submitted to anthropometric measurements (weight, height, Quetelét index, tricipital skin fold, subscapular skin fold, arm circumference, arm muscle circumference, arm area, arm muscle area, and arm adipose area) and to laboratory evaluation by protein electrophoresis. Arm circumference, arm area and arm musc… Show more

“…The average BMI of our patients was significantly lower than that of the HCs, and no association was detected between serum levels of 25(OH)D and the BMI of participants. Patients with pemphigus are at risk of malnutrition and protein deficiency due to cutaneous loss and impaired oral intake, and they tend to present with lower BMI . Barraviera et al .…”

“…Patients with pemphigus are at risk of malnutrition and protein deficiency due to cutaneous loss and impaired oral intake, and they tend to present with lower BMI. 16 Barraviera et al 16 showed that, despite lower BMI in patients with pemphigus, particularly in those with extensive involvement, there was no alteration in the body fat store of patients compared with HCs, although they found the arm circumference, as an indicator of protein mass, was lower in patients with pemphigus. For a given BMI, a subject with pemphigus may have greater fat mass and lower lean mass than a healthy person, thus, adiposity indices such as skin folds or waist circumference, rather than BMI, may show a stronger association with 25(OH)D levels.…”

“…The BMI of the patients with pemphigus was significantly lower than that of the control volunteer. Changes in body weight may reflect poor oral intake and transcutaneous nutrient loss in patients due to oral and cutaneous erosions, respectively [11]. …”

“…Despite possible nutritional depletion that can result from the generalized blisters formation and widespread skin exfoliation, no references to nutritional evaluation on pemphigus foliaceus are available in the literature, except a recent one which concludes that untreated pemphigus foliaceus patients presented signs and symptoms of protein, but not energy malnutrition 1 .…”
