“…The prevalent species was L. intermedia, followed by L. whitmani. L. intermedia was considered as a possible vector of L. (V.) braziliensis during recent outbreaks in modified environments; L. whitmani has been its primary vector, responsible for the traditional sporadic transmission, and associated with work in the forest (Lainson & Shaw 1979, Gomes et al 1990, Pereira & Hoch 1990, Rangel et al 1990, Stolf et al 1993, Gomes 1994, Queiroz et al 1994, Tolezano 1994, Salomón 1997, Salomón & Zaidemberg 1997.…”

“…The Montenegro test is considered highly specific and is used routinely in diagnosing the disease, although it is associated with recent and past infections with Leishmania, and some authors believe it can remain positive throughout the individual's lifetime (Montenegro 1926, Manson-Bahr 1987, Nascimento et al 1993. Populations from endemic areas present relatively high frequencies of Montenegro-positive individuals unrelated to the clinical disease, indicating possible prior exposure to the parasite with asymptomatic infection (Guerra et al 1985, Kadaro et al 1993, Stolf et al 1993. A "false-positive" response in individuals with other infections may occur in a few cases (Furtado 1980).…”

“…However, independent of the density, the species has already been recorded in Barra (Forattini et al 1976;taniguchi et al 1991;sttolF et al 1993). These three species' demonstrated capacity for adaptation to anthropic environments impacted by a variety of actions needs to be taken into consideration.…”
