Isolation of urease-positive Vibrio parahaemolyticus from diarrheal patients in Northeast Brazi

Abstract: Of 21 human fecal strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, isolated on the Northeast Coast of Brazil, eight (38%) were urease positive. Most of these strains, in contrast to the urease-negative ones, did not produce the hemolysin responsible for the Kanagawa phenomenon.

“…In the present study it was observed that one strain showed beta-hemolysis on Wagatsuma agar (Kanagawa positive) but it was negative for tdh gene. This phenomenon has been reported in Brazil 1,4,16,24,32 and might be due to deletion or mutation in the tdh gene 33 .…”

“…parahaemolyticus, isolated in the same period and regions but not related epidemiologically, were studied as those of the isolated cases (out group). The same serogroups were present, pointing out that the serotype O3:K6 had not been reported in the northeast region and that type O3:KUT was cited on one occasion as the causative agent of gastroenteritis by Magalhães et al. (1991a,b, 1992), although no reference was made in these latter investigations to the predominance of one particular serogroup/serotype.…”

“…In relation to Brazil, there are few references to V. parahaemolyticus in intestinal infections (Hofer 1983; Magalhães et al. 1991a,b; 1992) and in the colonization of cutaneous wounds (Rodrigues et al.…”

“…In relation to Brazil, there are few references to V. parahaemolyticus in cases of intestinal infections of human isolates (Hofer, 1983; Magalhaes et al, 1991a,b, 1992) in the colonization of cutaneous wounds (Rodrigues et al, 2001). In 1991 in Recife, a tropical city situated in Northeast Brazil, V. parahaemolyticus cultures were isolated from 21 cases of gastroenteritis associated with the consumption of different types of seafood.…”

“…In 1991 in Recife, a tropical city situated in Northeast Brazil, V. parahaemolyticus cultures were isolated from 21 cases of gastroenteritis associated with the consumption of different types of seafood. The serotypes detected belonged to diverse serovars, including O1:K56, O3:K5, O3:K58, O3:KUT, O4:K4,O4:K10, O4:K12, O4:K53, O4:KUT, O5:KUT, and O10:KUT (Magalhaes et al, 1991a). In 1992, V. parahaemolyticus strains were identified in 18 human isolates and found to carry either the tdh , trh , or both genes (Magalhaes et al, 1992).…”
