Introduction: Depressive disorders can be defined as episodes of depressed mood or loss of interest and pleasure in nearly all activities. Depression is considered a major mental disorder in the elderly, and may be related to quality of sleep and living habits as well as being influenced by sociodemographic factors. Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression among the elderly in the north-east of Brazil, and the relationship between the condition and socio-demographic profile, quality of sleep and living habits. Method: An epidemiological cross-sectional study was performed of the elderly population of the urban area of Campina Grande, Paraiba. The dependent variable presence of depression and the independent variables sociodemographic aspects, sleep quality, and living habits were investigated. Estimates of the prevalence of the variables were obtained and association measured using Poisson Regression. A 5% significance level was adopted for the estimates. Results: The study included 168 elderly patients with a mean age of 72.3 (±7.8) years, most of whom, 122 (72.6%), were women. Depression was identified in 72 elderly persons (42.9%). Elderly women were twice as associated with depression (PR=2.26) as men. A subjective quality of sleep of very good (PR=0.34), medium/high risk of sleep disturbance (PR = 4.08), taking sleeping medications once or twice (PR=5.21) and three times or more (PR=8.69) a week, daytime dysfunction once or twice (PR=14.40) and three times or more (PR=27) a week and poor quality of sleep on the Pittsburgh index were associated with depression in bivariate analysis, although there was no relationship following multivariable adjustment. Conclusion: The prevalence of depression was high in the studied population, being noticeably more frequent among elderly woman. However, it was not possible to detect an association between depression and living habits and sleep quality.

Portuguese / English: www.scielo.br/reeusp RESUMEN La investigación tuvo como objetivo comprender cómo los cuidadores familiares vivencian la depresión de los adultos mayores, en su contexto cultural. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo de trayectoria etnográ-fica utilizando el referencial de Spradley. El universo cultural se constituyó con familiares, quienes ejercían el rol de cuidador, obteniéndose su participación a través de consentimiento informado. La enfermedad es percibida por los cuidadores como una limitación profunda en la calidad de vida del anciano, sumando soledad, tristeza y dolor. Los sentimientos de los pacientes deprimidos se hacen extensivos a los cuidadores, quienes también corren el riesgo de deprimirse. Las responsabilidades propias del cuidado también generan en los cuidadores sentimientos de culpa, lo cual los expone a un mayor grado de sufrimiento. Los familiares reconocen las formas de inicio de la enfermedad, sus atributos, las formas de tratamiento, y el estigma social asociado a la enfermedad mental y su rol fundamental de apoyo y cuidado en la recuperación. DESCRIPTORES ABSTRACTThe objective of the study was to understand how family caregivers experience the depression of older people in their care, within their cultural context. This is a qualitative study of ethnographic trajectory, performed using Spradley as the framework. The cultural universe consisted of relatives who performed the role of caregivers, who provided informed consent. Caregivers perceived the disease as a deep limitation on their way of living, involving loneliness, sadness and pity. The feelings of the depressed patients extend to the caregiver, who also faces the risk of suffering from depression. The responsibilities of caring also generate feelings of guilt that produce more suffering. Relatives recognize the onset of the disease, their attributes, the forms of treatment, and the social stigma associated with this mental disease and that they have a fundamental role in providing support and care in the recovery process.

RESUMOObjetivos: Caracterizar idosos do Centro-Dia Geriátrico de Rio Claro (SP) de acordo com os sintomas depressivos e o prejuízo funcional e, ainda, verificar a relação entre sintomas depressivos e desempenho nas atividades instrumentais da vida diária. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, transversal, do qual participaram 36 idosos. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: anamnese, Escala Geriátrica de Depressão e Questionário de Atividades Instrumentais de Pfeffer. A análise dos dados ocorreu por meio da estatística descritiva e dos testes U de Mann-Whi tney e correlação de Spearman, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Houve maior presença de mulheres na amostra, que apresentou em média 77,02 anos de idade e 3,44 anos de estudo. A prevalência de sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional foi de 30,5% e 63,8%, respectivamente, sendo maior entre as mulheres. Não houve diferença significativa entre as variáveis analisadas em comparação aos gêneros e às faixas etárias. O teste de correlação de Spearman apresentou rho = 0,38 e p = 0,02, indicando correlação positiva, porém fraca, entre sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional. Conclusão: Conclui-se que há uma baixa relação entre as variáveis sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional, sendo necessários novos estudos para investigar outros fatores que podem estar relacionados a essas variáveis. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and by the U Mann-Whitney test and Spearman's correlation test, with a significance level of 5%. Results: There was a greater presence of women in the sample, which showed a mean age of 77.02 years old and 3.44 years of study. The prevalence of depressive symptoms and functional impairment was 30.5% and 63.8%, respectively, being higher among women. There was no significant difference between the variables compared to the genders and age groups.
