Abstract: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the worldwide disseminated causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV is a member of the Lentivirus genus of Retroviridae family and is grouped in two types named HIV-1 and HIV-2. These viruses have a notable ability to mutate and adapt to the new conditions of human environment. A large incidence of errors at the transcriptional level results in changes on the genetic bases during the reproductive cycle. The elevated genomic variability of HIV has c… Show more

“…As the infection progresses, the CD4+ T cell lymphocyte (CD4+) count decreases, and the viral load tends to increase. In Brazil, the decisive criterion for AIDS occurs at a CD4+ count below 350 cells/mm³ (Requejo, 2006).…”

“…HIV 1 is the predominant form found throughout the world and is phylogenetically categorised into several different groups [1]. Of these, Group M (Major/Main) is the major cause of infections worldwide [1]. This group is further divided into 11 distinct subtypes or clades named A through K [1,2].…”
