ObjectiveTo study the susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti to the organophosphate insecticide temephos. Methods Samples of Ae. aegypti larvae were obtained, using ovitraps, from eight cities of the Federal District, central Brazil, in 2000 and 2001. Larvae were submitted to the diagnostic dose of 0.012 mg/l temephos, as recommended by standard World Health Organization methodology. Field populations were tested in parallel with reference strains Rockefeller and DIVAL, from the Environmental Surveillance Directory (DIVAL) insectary. The concentration and purity of temephos solutions were verified by gas chromatography. Correlation calculations were performed using StatView -SAS Institute Inc., version 5. Student's t test was used for detecting differences in susceptibility, with significance levels of α=0.05. ResultsIn 2000, Ae. aegypti larvae populations from Taguatinga, Guará, and Núcleo Bandeirante showed resistance to temephos, with mortality ranging from 54.1 to 63.4%. The populations from Gama, Planaltina, and Sobradinho showed altered levels of susceptibility (mortality ranging from 83.6 to 92.8%). The population from Ceilândia was the only susceptible one, with 98% mortality. In 2001, all populations tested were resistant (44.4 to 66.4% mortality). No significant correlation was found between the susceptibility of populations and the distance between the cities of origin, or the amount of insecticide applied in the years preceding the study. Conclusions Ae. aegypti susceptibility to temephos is changing in the Federal District. It is essential to continue monitoring the resistance of this vector to insecticides in order to ensure the efficiency of programs aimed at vector control and at the protection of human health.

A crescente incidência do dengue nas últimas décadas e o risco de reurbanização da febre amarela requerem estratégias efetivas e eficientes para o enfrentamento desses complexos processos ecológico-epidemiológicos pelos serviços de saúde pública no Brasil. Tradicionalmente, a principal estratégia para o controle do Aedes aegypti tem sido o uso intensivo de inseticidas para a eliminação do mosquito adulto ou de suas larvas. Para o combate ao adulto, utilizam-se com mais Resistência do Aedes aegypti ao Temefós em Municípios do Estado do CearáAedes aegypti resistance to temefos in counties of Ceará State ABSTRACTThe susceptibility of Aedes aegypti to temefos was evaluated by means of samples of eggs and larvae from four large counties in the State of Ceará (Fortaleza, Barbalha, Juazeiro do Norte and Crato). The technique standardized by the World Health Organization for tests with larvicides was used. The CL50 of eight samples from populations of Aedes was determined, as were their respective resistance ratios, compared to the CL50 of the susceptible Rockefeller strain. All populations submitted to the experiment showed resistance to temefos, with resistance ratios varying between 8 and 16. Analysis of these results reinforces prior evidence regarding the dissemination of temefos resistance in different locations in the state, subjected to considerable pressure for control in recent decades. The larvicide may lose its effectiveness if an urgent attempt is not made to reestablish the susceptibility of Aedes aegypti in these areas, profoundly affecting control campaigns currently under way. Bioassays were performed in order to detect the susceptibility of Aedes aegypti to the chemical insecticides temephos and cypermethrin. The results showed that this species is susceptible to temephos and presents resistance to cypermethrin.The strategies for controlling the principal vector of dengue, Aedes aegypti, are based on the utilization of chemical and biological products, integrated with environmental management programs. In Brazil, the programs that aim to control Aedes aegypti mainly utilize chemical insecticides, among which organophosphates (OP) and pyrethroids (P) are prominent. These programs require constant monitoring.The numbers of dengue cases are rising every year, and different factors influence this increase. Resistance to chemical products may favor an increase in the mosquito populations, thereby resulting in increases in the numbers of dengue cases. 1,4 For this reason, it is important to perform periodic monitoring of the susceptibility to insecticides of the populations implicated in the transmission of this disease. 3 This study presents data on the susceptibility of a population of Aedes aegypti in the city of Curitiba, State of Paraná, for the first time. This population was submitted to two chemical insecticides: temephos (organophosphate) and cypermethrin (pyrethroid). The resistance ratio was compared with the data for the standard colony at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Immature specimens were collected from different districts of Curitiba between January and April 2003.Aedes aegypti was only found in the sample from the Uberaba district, in an artificial breeding ground (automobile wreckage in a scrap metal yard). This was the only population originating from Curitiba utilized in the susceptibility tests.The lineage utilized for making the comparison was the Rockefeller CDC. The insecticides utilized in the bioassays were temephos, "Temephos Fersol 1G" (granulated, 1%), and cypermethrin, "Cynoff 400 Pm" (powder, 25%). These products were diluted in mineral water to prepare the standard solutions with the same concentration of 50 ppm of active ingredient.The process for the bioassays followed the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). 5 The results were submitted to Probit analysis. 2 The following criteria were utilized for determining the resistance: if the mortality rate was greater than or equal to 98%, the sample was considered to susceptible; if the mortality rate was 80 to 97%, the response was checked by repeating the experiment; and if the mortality rate was less than 80%, the sample was considered to be resistant. 5 A total of 750 larvae were analyzed in relation to cypermethrin and 700 in relation to temephos, in-
