Rabies is a disease caused by a virus belonging to the family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus (RABV), and is characterized as a progressive and acute encephalitis that presents high lethality. Between 2002 and 2012, 2149 wild animals were found positive for RABV in Brazil where 79% were associated with the aerial cycle of the disease. As part of the active surveillance of rabies in Brazil, the objective of this study was to investigate the presence of RABV infection in bats captured in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro city. Forty-four bats were tested for RABV at Institute Jorge Vaitsman (IJV), reference laboratory for rabies in Rio de Janeiro State. Of the individuals captured and sent for the diagnosis of rabies, a total of 15 were identified as being hematophagous, all of them belonging to the species Desmodus rotundus. Twenty-four individuals were considered as frugivorous, four as insectivores and one individual (Lonchophylla peracchii) identified as having a pollen/ nectar feeding habit. All specimen sent to RABV diagnosis presented negative results. Considering the active surveillance for RABV in Brazil, studies of fauna survey with serological characterization are important in the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance and protection of human life.

RESUMENFrente al desafío que la rabia representa para la industria pecuaria y la salud pública en América Latina, el presente artículo tiene como objetivo hacer una revisión de literatura amplia y crítica sobre la epidemiología de la rabia transmitida por murciélagos en Brasil. El tema es abordado inicialmente desde una perspectiva histórica hasta la caracterización molecular de aislamientos del virus, para finalmente contrastar con la situación de otros países de las Américas. La información referente a Brasil es presentada de manera separada debido a la gran abundancia de especies de murciélagos de diversos hábitos alimenticios, implicadas en la transmisión del virus de la rabia y las complejas relaciones entre los ciclos epidemiológicos revelados por estudios de tipificación antigénica y análisis filogenético, lo cual ha permitido reconocer con más nitidez, la importancia de los quirópteros como reservorios y transmisores de esta enfermedad. Este nuevo escenario epidemiológico exige reexaminar las medidas de control aplicadas hasta el momento, desde un abordaje multidisciplinar, así como cooperación intersectorial y participación por parte de la comunidad.Palabras clave: epidemiología, murciélagos, rabia. ABSTRACTConsidering that rabies represents a challenge for the livestock industry and public health in Latin America, this article is intended to do a comprehensive and critical literature review on the epidemiology of rabies transmitted by bats in Brazil. The subject is addressed from a historical perspective to molecular characterization of rabies virus isolates and finally making a contrast with other countries of the Americas. Information concerning Brazil is presented separately because of the abundance of bats species with different feeding habits, involved in the transmission of rabies virus and the complex relationships between epidemiological cycles in this country, which have been disclosed by antigenic typing and phylogenetic analysis. This has allowed to recognize more clearly the importance of bats as reservoirs and transmitters of this disease. This new epidemiological scenario requires reappraising current control measures, using a multidisciplinary approach, intersectoral cooperation and community participation.

A raiva é uma enfermidade infectocontagiosa de caráter zoonótico, causada pelo vírus daraiva (RABV). Os quirópteros juntamente com os canídeos são os principais reservatórios doRABV, sendo responsáveis respectivamente pela manutenção dos ciclos aéreo e terrestre dadoença. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identificar interações entre o vírus e oreservatório no ciclo aéreo da raiva. Para isto, a presença do RABV foi investigada emamostras de saliva de morcegos de diferentes espécies. Foram realizadas trinta e seis capturasde morcegos, na Região de Maringá, Paraná, sul do Brasil, no período de abril a dezembro de2013. Os morcegos foram capturados com auxílio de redes de nylon e acondicionados emsacos de algodão. Foram registrados os dados biométricos e coletada uma amostra de swaboral de cada exemplar. Para a identificação do RABV, foi realizada a técnica de Semi-NestedRT-PCR (“Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction”) tendo como alvo o gene N quecodifica a nucleoproteína do vírus. A análise de dados foi realizada por estatística descritiva.Ao longo do estudo, foram capturados 444 morcegos, pertencentes a quatro famílias e quinzeespécies. O RABV não foi identificado em nenhuma das amostras analisadas.
