Obst ructive Sleep Disorders (OSD) affect mostly the pediatric population. Within this group, its main etiology is adenotonsillar hyperplasia, being adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy the best treatment option for quality of life improvement. Aim: To asses quality of life of children with OSD after adenoidectomy/adenotonsillectomy. Method: A prospective study was carried out with 48 children, between 2 and 11 years, with clinical manifestations of OSD and obstructive adenotonsillar hyperplasia. The OSA18 questionnaire was answered by the parents to evaluate their children's quality of life before surgery; at about thirty days and at least eleven months after the procedure. A higher score meant a worse quality of life. Results: Before surgery, the average OSA18 score was 82.83(SD=12.57), with an average global score for quality of life of 6.04(SD=1.66). Within thirty days after surgery, the average OSA18 score was 34.3 (SD=9.95) with an average global score of 9.6(SD=0.81), both showing significant reduction (p< 0.001). Thirty-four children (70.83%) were re-evaluated between 11 and 30 months (average=16.85; SD=5.16). The average OSA18 score was 35.44 (SD=19.95) with an average global score of 9.28 (SD=1.78). The postoperative evaluations weren't significantly different. Conclusion: surgery improves the quality of life of children with OSD, and such improvement maintains for the long run.

ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to compare the perception of the parents about the quality of life of children and adolescents with and without difficulties of nasal route use. The Protocols of Quality of Life of Oral Breathing Children and MBGR (subitems Clinical History and Breathing) were applied to 64 families with and without complaints about mouth breathing. The sample consisted of subjects aged between five and sixteen years old and was divided into two groups: Control Group (CG -32 subjects, average age 9.78 ± 2.71), with the possibility of nasal route use with time equal or less than two minutes and Experimental Group (GE -32 subjects, average age: 9.59 years), with the possibility of nasal use for less than two minutes. The possibility of the nasal use was evaluated with the use of a timer, requiring the maintenance of a small amount of water in the mouth for, at least, two minutes. If the subject remained unquiet or swallowed before the stipulated time, it was carried with retest for two more attempts, to ensure the obtained results. ANOVA test was applied, considering p value of 5% was. There were no significant statistically differences between the studied groups (p>0,05). It can be concluded that despite the complaints related to the breathing mode of children and adolescents with familiar complaints about mouth breathing, these do not seem to have interfered directly in the quality of life, according to the Protocol used.

Introduction Sleep respiratory disorders (SRDs) are often found in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objective The aim was to establish the prevalence of risk to develop an SRD using the Clinical Berlin Questionnaire (CBQ) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in patients with T2DM and verifying the correlation of anthropometric measurements and life quality (LQ) with ESS. Methods A descriptive and analytical study of a case series evaluating 208 patients with T2DM, submitted to clinical and biochemical evaluation and implementation of CBQ, ESS, and WHOQOL-bref to evaluate LQ. Results Mean age was 60.8 ± 8.8 years, and 65.4% were women. Most diabetics were overweight (36.1%), and 29.8% were class I obese. One-third had positive risk signals for a SRD, with 87.0 and 34.1% having high risk in CBQ and sleep disorders in ESS, respectively. There was a significant difference in the general LQ between the low- and high-risk groups in the CBQ. Conclusion In this scenario, it is noteworthy that the active search for sleep disorders must start from simple methods, such as application of protocols.
