Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the reproductive cycle of the crab Hepatus pudibundus (Herbst, 1785). The crabs were collected in Ubatuba, SP (23 o 26'S and 45 o 02'W) monthly from the July, 1992 to June, 1993. Samplings were performed with an "otter trawl". In the laboratory the crabs were numbered, sexed and measured for their maximum carapace width. The gonad developmental stage and the moult stage were also macroscopically registered. In all sampled months ovigerous females and crabs in both sexes with develop… Show more

“…Orton pointed out that, in the tropics, animals reproduce continuously or for long periods of the year, as opposed to the seasonal reproduction found in cooler temperate regions. However, in this study we found no significant relationship between the reproductive activity of females and water temperatures, similarly to Reigada & Negreiros-Fransozo (2000). The highest percentage of ovigerous females of H. pudibundus was found in spring, and of AD and ovigerous females in the summer of both years.…”

“…Males and females were categorized as immature or adult based on macroscopic observations of the shape and adherence of the abdomen to the thoracic sternites (Taissoun 1969). All crabs were dissected and their gonads were classified macroscopically in four stages (immature, rudimentary, developing and advanced) depending on the shape, color and volume, according to Reigada & Negreiros-Fransozo (2000).…”

“…A reprodução contínua é comum em braquiúros tropicais e subtropicais. Além disso, a dinâmica reprodutiva de uma espécie pode diferir em populações isoladas geograficamente (REIGADA & NEGREIROS-FRANSOZO, 2000).…”

“…In females, the evaluation of physiological maturity encompasses the study of these functional and structural characteristics. Ovarian development until ovulation is commonly assessed by macroscopic analyses using the color and proportion of the gonads in the cephalothorax for several brachyuran groups, including portunids, aethrids and majoids [4][5][6]. Although macroscopic analyses are common, detailed information about ovarian…”
