Abstract: The northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro shelters many coastal lagoons, located, mostly, in the "restinga" strip that stretches from the municipality of Macaé to the municipality of Quissamã. During 1995 and 1996 samplings were made aiming to verify the diversity and density of Natantia larvae in the Imboassica, Cabiúnas and Comprida lagoons. The monthly samples were taken with a 500 µ net, in horizontal drags from a boat. In Comprida lagoon no larvae of any family of these crustaceans were found. In C… Show more

“…1) (Esteves, 1998). Occasionally, the sandbar that separates the coastal lagoon from the ocean is opened, usually artificially with the aim of controlling the effect of floods by lowering the water level and/or allowing the entry of economically important fishes (Faria et al, 1994;Albertoni et al,1999). The sandbar is about 20 m wide and is occasionally run over by the waves, which bring salt water into the lagoon.…”

“…Among these are urbanization of its margins; landfills; and frequent and aperiodic openings of the sandbar separating it from the ocean (Faria et al, 1998;Fernandes, 1998;Gonçalves et al, 1998a;Albertoni et al, 1999). The most frequent consequences are predominance of fine particles (silts and clay), increase in organic matter accumulation on the sediment due to enhanced detritus production, and increased production of toxic gases such as H 2 S and CH 4 with consequent decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration at the bottom, near the sediment-water interface (Esteves, 1998;Gonçalves et al, 1998b).…”

“…In a tropical lagoon in the Brazilian coast, scientific results suggested the opening of the sandbar together with the input of post-larvae (ALBERTONI et al, 1999). In another area, conflicts between fishermen in relation to sandbar opening resulted in low yields (LIMA et al, 2001).…”

“…Worldwide, the role of coastal lagoons in the life cycle of penaeid species had been assessed only in Celestun Lagoon, Mexico (PÉREZ-CASTAÑEDA & DEFEO 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and in Puerto Rico (STONER, 1988). Besides Patos Lagoon, data on the abundance of F. paulensis are available for three lagoons along the Brazilian central coast (ALBERTONI et al, 1999(ALBERTONI et al, , 2003, two lagoons on the southern Brazilian coast (BRANCO & VERANI, 1998a, b;FAUSTO & FONTOURA, 1999) and recently in the nearby Conceição Lagoon (LÜCHMANN et al, 2008).…”
