Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the impact of universal early childhood vaccination against varicella on the reduction of its incidence in a state capital in southern Brazil. Methods:Official epidemiologic surveillance data from the SINAN database for the 1997-2007 period were used to evaluate the impact of varicella vaccination targeting all children < 2 years of age in Florianópolis (the capital city of the state of Santa Catarina), Brazil, since 2002, thus comprising 5 years before and 6 years after the vaccination.… Show more

“…A seasonal pattern of infection was also observed, with incidences typically peaking during the winter and spring; this was noted in both tropical (Mexico) and temperate (Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil) countries [42]. The highest incidence of varicella was reported in children aged < 10 years [22, 30, 42].…”

“…In 2009, the incidence in Uruguay was 20/100,000 [23]. In the Florianópolis, after initiation of varicella vaccination targeting all children < 2 years old in 2002, there was a 75.5% reduction in incidence among the group of children aged 1–4 years; this contrasted with a rising incidence in this age group in the rest of the state, which had not implemented vaccination [30].…”

“…In Brazil, the first publication including data on the impact of the VV was a study comparing the incidence of varicella in children from Florianópolis - a city that implemented VV in the population under 2 years old in 2002 - and the remainder of the state of Santa Catarina 41. The study observed a 75.5% decrease in the incidence rate of the capital, compared with the rest of state, in children aged 1-4 years, and compared the pre- and post-vaccination period, but the study failed to present data on hospitalization rates.…”
