Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To compare voice and life quality of male patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, with individuals without disease (Control Group). METHODS: A cross-sectional study that evaluated the voice of individuals with Parkinson's disease, the group was composed of 27 subjects, aged from 39 to 79 years-old (average 59.96). The Control Group was matched on sex and age. Participants underwent voice recording. Perceptual evaluation was made using GRBASI scale, which considers G as the overall degree of dy… Show more

“…Previous studies also suggest that swallowing disturbances have a major impact on QoL in patients with IPD. 1,2,8,10 Plowman-Prine et al 16 reported that a decrease in swallow-related QoL, as measured by the Swallow Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (SWAL-QOL), is positively correlated with a decrease in overall healthrelated QoL (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39) in IPD. That study found no relationships between swallow-specific QoL and disease duration or severity in a group of 36 IPD patients.…”

“…Validated and commonly used quality‐of‐life (QoL) questionnaires such as the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) or MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) are useful tools to assess the patient's subjective perception of dysphonia and dysphagia, respectively. Although voice and swallowing disturbances can have a major impact on QoL in IPD, little is known about their impact on QoL as the disease becomes more severe …”

“…Studies that have implemented self-assessment protocols for PD patients showed a decline in quality of life caused by vocal and communication disorders (15,(27)(28)(29) , showing that the greater the intensity of the disease, the greater the dissatisfaction with one's own voice (28) . However, this correlation does not occur with general communication (15) , which is changed regardless of disease progression.…”

“…The most common perceptual tool used around the world still remains the Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain (GRBAS) scale that was initially introduced by Hirano et al [1] in 1981 and completed (with Instability, GRBASI) by Dejonckere et al [2] in 1996. In the current literature, an important methodological variability exists concerning the completion of the GRBASI grading, since it may be based on sustained vowel [3, 4], connected speech [5], conversation, counting task [6], or reading text [7, 8]. These voice samples can be used in another perceptual tool such as the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice, which includes different tasks, i.e., vowels, connected speech, and conversation [9].…”
