Glasgow outcome scale at hospital discharge as a prognostic index in patients with severe traumatic brain injury

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) at discharge (GOS-HD) as a prognostic indicator in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHOD: Retrospective data were collected of 45 patients, with Glasgow coma scale <8, age 25±10 years, 36 men, from medical records. Later, at home visit, two measures were scored: GOS-HD (according to information from family members) and GOS LATE (12 months after TBI). RESULTS: At discharge, the ERG showed: vegetative state (VS) in 2 (4%), severe disability (SD)… Show more

“…An epidemic that affects mainly the young damages a country's future. 9 From 11 studies, 1,5,6,8,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16] car accidents were involved in 43% of TBI, as compared with motorbike (30%) and pedestrian (27%). Of the six studies 1,6,11,12,14,15 (n = 1,753) including a pedal bicycles category, car dropped slightly to 40%, while motorbike and pedestrian were both associated with 23% of TBI and pedal bike was related in 14% of TBI.…”

“…5,6 Moreover, the GOSE also considers physical, social and cognitive outcomes. 2 Although the roles of GOS and GOSE in the prediction of TBI outcomes have not been completely proven, in general, they can be beneficial for predicting functional outcomes and as indicators for starting rehabilitation sooner which can, ultimately, reduce the cost of care.
