Abstract: -Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is one of the autoimmune diseases of the inner ear (AIED), which is characterized by a hearing loss of above 30 decibels in at least three contiguous audiometric frequencies over a time course of 72 hours or shorter. Its cause can be found in only 10% to 15% of patients. Histopathologic findings have reported retrograde neuronal degeneration and atrophy of Corti's organ and of the vascular stria. This paper describes a case of a middle-aged female patient undergoing a… Show more

“…Recently, many studies have been performed to explore the cause and pathogenesis of SSNHL [11][12][13][14][15]. Thus far, These signals may reflect minor hemorrhage or the increased concentration of protein in the inner ear, which has passed through blood vessels with increased permeability [5].…”

“…Although few case reports on the occurrence of sudden hearing impairment in patients with hyperthyroidism treated with propylthiouracil may be encountered in the literature [12], the issue of hearing loss directly related to hyperthyroidism has not been previously explored. Our study results suggest the metabolic effects of thyroid hormones and thyrotoxicosis may play a role in the development of hearing loss.…”

“…Several cases of drug-related hearing loss have been reported in patients with Graves' disease (GD) on propylthiouracil treatment [12][13][14][15]. However, to date, the relationship between hyperthyroidism and the auditory system has not been fully elucidated.…”

“…In the literature, both biochemical and serological acute phase reactants have been questioned in studies investigating autoimmune mechanisms in sudden hearing loss and they have been reported to be useful in diagnosis (2). Greco et al 7and Werneck et al (8) reported that C3 and C4 levels decreased but C3b levels did not decrease. Consistent with the literature, 54% decrease was observed in C3 levels in our study.…”

“…In the literature, lipid profile and homocysteine were thought to play a role in microvascular processes (1). Similarly, in the literature, accompanying autoimmune diseases have been reported in many patients with sudden hearing loss (7,8). The treatment and prognosis of sudden hearing loss depends on the accuracy of the diagnosis of the disease (9).…”
