Objective: To assess the relationship between cognitive function, balance, risk of falls and functionality in elderly persons with impaired cognitive function and verify if those with mild cognitive impairment had better balance, functionality and a lower risk of falls than those with dementia. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study of 33 elderly persons of both genders, aged over 60 years, were evaluated using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR) and Barthel Index. Four groups were considered: mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n=9), mild dementia (MID; n=12), moderate dementia (MOD; n=7) and severe dementia (SD; n=5). Data comparison was performed by the Mann Whitney U-test and correlation by Spearman's rank Correlation Coefficient, whit a significance level of ( p<0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the risk of falls and functionality between the MID and MOD groups, functionality between the MOD and SD groups, and balance, functionality and risk of falls between the MID and SD groups. A moderate correlation between MMSE and BBS (r=0.543; p=0.006) was observed in the MCI group, and a moderate negative correlation between p<0.001) and a strong correlation between MMSE and Barthel (r=0.708; p<0.001) were observed in the dementia group. Conclusion: The deterioration in cognitive function was associated with greater impairment of functionality, balance and an increased risk of falls in elderly persons with dementia, compared to elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of violence among the elderly and to analyze its association with demographic, socioeconomic and health conditions. Method: A cross sectional population-based study was conducted of 1,705 individuals aged 60 years or older living in the city of Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina, between 2009 to 2010. Verbal, psychological, physical and financial violence was evaluated with a questionnaire used in the Pesquisa Saúde Bem-estar e Envelhecimento (Health and Wellbeing in Aging Survey) (SABE). Prevalence was calculated for each type of violence and the overall prevalence of violence was identified using the categories of the explanatory variables. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with violence. Results: The general prevalence of violence was approximately 13.0%, while verbal violence occurred among 11.0% of respondents. The adjusted analysis showed that being female (OR=2.08) and elderly persons who were single or divorced were 66% more likely to suffer violence. Those who lived with their children or grandchildren were twice as likely to suffer violence (95% CI: 1:40 to 3:40). Conclusions: Although the results showed that the prevalence of violence against the elderly was greater than predicted by the WHO, we suspect that this number may be even higher. ResumoContexto: Pesquisas documentam que a hipertensão arterial pode estar envolvida no declínio cognitivo em pacientes idosos. Estima-se que até 60% dos idosos apresentem hipertensão arterial, tornando-os mais suscetíveis ao declínio cognitivo. Objetivo: Investigar a relação entre hipertensão arterial e desempenho cognitivo em idosos não portadores de demências ou depressão. Método: A amostra foi constituída por idosos participantes de pesquisa populacional em andamento sobre envelhecimento no município de Amparo (SP). Seguindo critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 80 homens e mulheres (40 hipertensos e 40 normotensos) com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, equivalentes quanto às variáveis sociodemográficas e de saúde. Para avaliar sintomas depressivos, foi utilizada a Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Os testes cognitivos utilizados foram a bateria neuropsicológica Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) e o Teste do Desenho do Relógio e Dígitos ordem direta e inversa. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio de análise de regressão logística com modelo univariado e multivariado e análise de conglomerados (cluster analysis). Resultados: Não foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas para as variáveis cognitivas entre os dois grupos. A diferença para fluência verbal aproximou-se da significância estatística (p = 0,075). Conclusões: Os resultados encontrados podem ser explicados pela adesão desta população pertencente à estratégia de saúde da família ao tratamento medicamentoso. Estudos longitudinais serão necessários para investigar a relação entre a hipertensão arterial e o declínio cognitivo na pessoa idosa.
