Show more

“…Although meningitis alone brought on by P. brasiliensis is rare, the patient can present with meningeal signs. It is a skull base meningitis, characterized by a mild to moderate increase in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) cell count, predominated by monocytes and lymphocytes; in some unusual cases the CSF cell count is higher than 700 cells/mm 3 [32].…”

“…The direct examination of the CSF rarely demonstrates P. brasiliensis. 5 Studies with gp43 and gp70 antigen in serum or CSF showed high sensitivity in patients with neuroparacoccidioidomycosis. In our case, chest radiography helped us in achieving the correct diagnosis with demonstration of suggestive findings of fungal infection.…”

“…Neuroparacoccidioidomycosis is a rare disease of difficult diagnosis, with a mortality rate greater than 50% in some studies, with almost all the reported cases consisting of surgical or autopsy findings. 2,5 A recent study of 422 patients with paracoccidioidomycosis diagnosed between 1980 and 1999 presented six cases (1.4%) of central nervous system involvement, two of them in the spinal cord. Paniago et al reported a series of 13 cases of neuroparacoccidioidomycosis while spinal cord involvement was present in 4 patients (30.7%).…”
