Comparison between the NASCET method and subjective visual impression in the evaluation of internal carotid artery stenosis

Abstract: -Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of subjective visual impression (SVI) of an experienced neuroradiologist in the measurement of the degree of internal carotid artery (IC) stenosis evaluated by digital angiography (DGA). Method: Ten symptomatic patients with internal carotid stenosis greater than 70% in a previous duplex scan were submitted to DGA. The degree of stenosis in both sides (symptomatic and asymptomatic) were evaluated by the same neuro-radiologist who gave his SVI and applied the NASCET method i… Show more

“…Patients had a mean symptomatic stenosis of 77% compared with 46% on their asymptomatic side, as measured by conventional angiography, according to NASCET criteria. 10 The mean time (ϮSD) from USPIO infusion to CE was 6.9 days (Ϯ4.8 days; range, 40 hours to 18 days). Nineteen patients (95%) showed a USPIO signal loss on both the symptomatic and asymptomatic sides ( Figure 1).…”
