Abstract: -Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a marked and persistent fear of doing almost everything in front of people due to concerns about being judge by others. An up-to-date review is needed in order to reach a practical judgement of all psychopharmacological data. Case reports, open and double-blind trials with SAD were described and commented upon from a clinical point of view. The MEDLINE system was searched from 1975 to 2001. The references from the selected papers were also used as a source. MAOIs (fenelzine, t… Show more

“…There is still high controversy regarding the mode of inhibition that provides more benefits in clinical practice. Researchers supporting the advantages of irreversible MAO inhibitors argue that they are more potent than reversible ones, proposing that reversible inhibitors may not be effective enough [22,23]. Therefore, this may not be considered a constrain for the high potential of this molecule as hMAO-A inhibitor.…”

“…Although psychopharmacological treatment is available for social anxiety disorder,4 most of the costs of the disorder are the result of lost income and disability among people who are receiving no treatment for their disorder. One of the astonishing things about anxiety disorders is how media educational campaigns result in a dramatic increase in the number of treated patients with these conditions; patients often have symptoms for years, with no awareness that others have similar symptoms or that specific medical treatment exists.…”
