Abstract: -Despite intensive research we remain ignorant of the cause of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The dramatic rise in incidence, particularly of Crohn's disease, points towards environmental factors as playing a significant role. A major purpose of this review is to stimulate a co-ordinated international effort to establish an on-going data base in Central and South America in which new cases are registered and through which investigations into aetiology can be conducted. In both Brazil and Mexico

“…As with T1DM, the cause or causes of CD are not known , but antigens expressed by an imbalanced microbiome have been implicated in eliciting the immune response that drives gut inflammation . Viruses do not appear to be among these, and many have explicitly been excluded (including all hepatitis viruses, enteroviruses including coxsackie types A and B, Epstein–Barr virus, measles virus, human herpes virus types 1, 6, and 8, varicella‐zoster virus, mumps virus, rubella virus, rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus [reviewed in ]).…”

“…Mexico, Brazil and Argentina contributed scientifically with good information and take the lead in this continent, but there is still a huge space for improvement in the number and scientific level of the articles. In this issue of Arquivos de Gastroenterologia, Farrukh and Mayberry described a simple review of the IBD data from Latin American countries (3) . The lack of studies cited in the paper is alarming, and improvement in the development of IBD research in this region of the world is a real need.…”

“…In this interesting review article, the authors also point out that the situation in central and South America is quite similar to what occurred in Portugal and Spain a couple of decades ago. They expect that the incidence of IBD in the new world can really increase in the years to come, and try to stimulate local physicians to focus in research in both UC and CD, and correlate that even the ethiology of these entities can be clarified in areas where IBD research programmes are still embrionary (3) .…”
