Evaluation of gastric histology in children and adolescents with Helicobacter pylori gastritis using the Update Sydney System

Abstract: -Context -Although Helicobacter pylori infection is prevalent in our country, there are few studies evaluating the associated histological abnormalities in children. Objective -To evaluate the histological features of the gastric mucosa in children and adolescents with Helicobacter pylori gastritis. Methods -One hundred and thirty two gastric biopsies from 22 symptomatic patients infected with H. pylori (14F/8M, median age 10 y 5 mo, age range 2 y 11 mo to 16 y 9 mo) were evaluated. Evaluated gastric regions i… Show more

“…Of the test subjects, 60% were males, the mean age was 39.1 (±12.8) years and 50% of the studied subjects tested positive for H. pylori , according to international criteria established for their identification [12], [13] (Table 2) (additional details are provided in Table S2 ).…”

“…H. pylori infection was diagnosed based on the typical appearance of the bacterium along the mucus layer covering the gastric mucous membrane Antral biopsies were taken for histology evaluation due to higher density of the bacteria in gastric antrum and to the excellent sensitivity of this diagnostic method, according to international criteria established for their identification [12], [13] (additional details are provided in Table S2 ).…”

“…Generally, the patients in the present study had a low prevalence of chronic atrophic gastritis, and no patients had severe chronic atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia. Researchers from different countries have reported a varied incidence of gastric atrophy (0-72%) and intestinal metaplasia ( 0-21% ) in children (11,(25)(26)(27)(28). Genetic and environmental factors other than H. pylori infection may explain the striking differences.…”
