Abstract: Malnutrition was frequent and hand-grip strength seemed to be the most sensitive method for its diagnosis. Calories and protein intakes were inadequate. Considering that the predicted resting energy expenditure was higher than the measured one and the need to offer higher caloric intake, the use of the predicting equation may replace indirect calorimetry.

“…A similar result was obtained by Gottschall et al 10 for patients with cirrhosis; they found that HGS was more sensitive for the detection of malnutrition than BMI. This probably occurred because BMI does not distinguish between lean and fat mass 6 .…”

“…Hence, an individual may often seem to have an appropriate nutritional status (BMI>18.5kg/m 2 ) but have low lean body mass 27 , which can be directly verified by HGS 11 . Moreover, some diseases, such as liver cirrhosis and pulmonary diseases, may cause hydration changes, and consequently affect BMI 10,14,22 .…”

“…The subjective global assessment proposed by Detsky et al 5 has been considered a good approach for subjective assessment of patients with liver disease 6 , but water retention complicates its applicability since the estimated weight loss, which is part of this assessment, becomes impaired 7 .…”
