IntroductionThis study consisted in the comparison of the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) present in the stomach and in saliva of a sample of Portuguese adolescents and the assessment of the association between H. pylori infection with socio-demographic variables and prevalence of dental caries.Materials and MethodsA cross-sectional study was designed including a sample of 447 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years old, attending a public school in Sátão, Portugal. A questionnaire about socio-demographic variables and oral health behaviors was applied. Gastric H. pylori infection was determined using the urease breath test (UBT). Saliva collection was obtained and DNA was extracted by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in order to detect the presence of oral H. pylori.ResultsThe prevalence of gastric H. pylori detected by UBT was 35.9%. Within the adolescents with a gastric UBT positive, only 1.9% were positive for oral H. pylori. The presence of gastric H. pylori was found to be associated with age (>15years, Odds ratio (OR)=1.64,95%CI=1.08-2.52), residence area (urban,OR=1.48,95%CI=1.03-2.29) and parents´ professional situation (unemployed,OR=1.22,95%CI=1.02-1.23). Among those with detected dental caries during the intra-oral observation, 37.4% were positive for gastric H. pylori and 40.2% negative for the same bacterial strain (p=0.3).ConclusionsThe oral cavity cannot be considered a reservoir for infection of H. pylori. Gastric H. pylori infection was found to be associated with socio-demographic variables such as age, residence area and socioeconomic status.

ReSumoObjetivo: Traçar o perfil dos exames de endoscopia digestiva alta diagnóstica, realizados eletivamente em crianças do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal de Sergipe.Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo transversal descritivo com pacientes pediátricos encaminhados ao serviço de endoscopia digestiva alta do Hospital Universitário. Os dados clínicos foram obtidos por meio de entrevista com os responsáveis pelos pacientes e consulta aos prontuários. As variáveis resultantes do exame endoscópio foram os achados anatômicos, histopatológicos e o teste da urease.Resultados: Foram incluídos 21 pacientes no estudo. A idade média foi 8,9±3,6 anos. Dos pacientes, 52% eram do gênero feminino e 57% provenientes da zona rural. O teste da urease foi realizado em 17 (81%) pacientes, isolando-se o Helicobacter pylori em oito (47%) . Dos 21 pacientes avaliados, 14 (67%) apresentaram alteração endoscópica. Foi feita biópsia de mucosa de 17 crianças e, em 15 delas (88%), o resultado mostrou-se anormal. Das 15 crianças submetidas à pesquisa histológica para Helicobacter pylori, 60% tiveram resultado positivo, ressaltando-se que o isolamento do agente foi feito nas cinco crianças com diagnóstico endoscópico de gastrite nodular antral. Nenhuma complicação decorrente do procedimento foi observada na amostra estudada.Conclusões: Em uma série de casos pediátricos triados clinicamente, a endoscopia, juntamente com resultados anatô-micos, histológicos e do teste da urease, evidenciou alterações na maioria dos pacientes e foi realizada com segurança.Palavras-chave: endoscopia; Helicobacter pylori; criança. AbStRActObjective: To describe the profile of the pediatric esophagogastroduodenoscopy examinations performed electively in children at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe, in Northeast Brazil.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in pediatric patients admitted to the endoscopy service of the University Hospital. Clinical data were collected by interviews with children's parents or caregivers and research of medical records. The resultant variables from the endoscopy examination were the anatomical and histopatologic findings, and the urease test.Results: 21 patients, with a mean age of 8.9±3.6 years, were studied; 52% of them were females and 57% came from rural areas of the state. Urease test was performed in 17 (81%) patients and resulted positive in eight (47%) of them. Out of the 21 patients, 14 (67%) had some endoscopic abnormality. Among the 17 children that had biopsies performed, 15 (88%) showed abnormal results. Histopathological search of Helicobacter pylori was performed in 15 patients and the results were positive in 60%. This agent was isolated in all five children with endoscopic diagnosis of nodular antral gastritis. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Itapeuá, Municipality of Coari, in the rural area of Amazonas State, Brazil. A seroprevalence of 82% was observed in a sample of 100 individuals examined. The infection rate verified in children and adolescents (53%; 44/82) was higher than in adults and elderly (47%; 39/82). Stratified sampling of the population in age intervals of ten years showed that the age group 11-20 presented the highest frequency level (31%) and the highest infection rate (90%; 28/31). This association was relevant (G-test = 16.9312, p = 0.0095), and the prevalence of infection among male adults and female children (G-test = 9.8576, p = 0.0072) showed that individuals in these age groups are more susceptible to this bacterial infection.
