Abstract: This study suggests that serum albumin concentration is a very sensitive marker of inflammatory activity and not good indicator of the nutritional status in Crohn's disease. It is necessary a suitable laboratorial parameter for routine nutrition assessment in patients with this inflammatory bowel disease.

“…Some authors affirm that albumin should not be used as a standalone criterion for the nutritional assessment of patients, and that it should be associated with other nutritional indicators, such as anthropometry and body composition. 21,22 This is due to their possible influence on the serum concentration of albumin, especially of changes in vascular permeability caused by the inflammatory process. Said situation generates a loss of albumin from the intravascular to the extravascular space and reduces their serum levels.…”

“…Albumin is a hepatic protein involved in homeostasis of blood osmotic pressure. A decrease in albumin levels leads to problems in the abdomen (ascite) and in the lungs (pulmonary oedema) (Cabral et al, 2001;Mello et al, 2004;Orhue et al, 2005). Similarly to human beings, alterations in albumin and alkaline phosphatase levels observed in animals challenged with the aero strain could be the results of inflammatory reactions (Fey & Gauldie, 1990;Cabral et al, 2001).…”
