Abstract: -Background -Variceal bleeding has a high mortality among cirrhotics, and screening with endoscopy is indicated at the diagnosis of cirrhosis.Screening with endoscopy implies discomfort, risks and considerable costs. Objective -To evaluate platelet count squared/spleen diameter-aspartate aminotransferase ratio (PS/SA), as a non-invasive predictor of esophageal varices in cirrhotics. Methods -This cross-sectional study evaluated cirrhotics for PS/SA and presence of esophageal varices. Outpatient records of cirr… Show more

“…4). However, AST/ALT had no statistically significant difference (p ≥ 0.05), which was in agreement with Mattos et al [25] who reported that AST/ALT ratio had no value in predicting EVs. Also, APRI score was measured in both groups; it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p ≥ 0.05), which was in agreement with Stefanescu et al [26].…”

“…Platelet count squared/spleen diameteraspartate aminotransferase ratio At the cutoff value of 3 Â 10 8 , PS/SA had a sensitivity of 95.80%, a specificity of 22.70%, a PPV of 77.20%, and an NPV of 66.70% for predicting EVs. Thus, for patients without EVs, near 25% of them could spare endoscopy [93].…”
