Abstract: RESUMOEach resident studied the standard strabismus surgery technique on a CD-ROM, then performed a rabbit rectus muscle recession and a strabismus surgery on a patient. A structured questionnaire was handed to the residents, and the authors made observations including variables referring to the surgical technique applied, self-evaluation of this technique and if appropriate training was given. Results: Thirty-eight questionnaires were analysed. All 1 st year residents (R1) had had some difficulty remembering … Show more

“…Among the noted observations, artificial eyeballs with extraocular muscles, pig's eyes, and rabbit eyes with externally supplemented other animal extraocular muscles have been used to refine the surgical skills. [25] However, these externally supplemented biological tissues are likely to have a lesser resemblance to the practical scenario; therefore, a simple and inexpensive technique with a better tissue resemblance to human eyes will be of greater benefit to the young practitioners.…”

“…[1] Hands-on experience of the young strabismologists is an important task during their residency training program to enhance surgical skills. [123456] However, this has to be balanced with the increased risk of complications which can occur in procedures carried out by residents. In the literature, there have been numerous efforts to enhance surgical skills by teaching surgeries on simulating extraocular muscles (bacon, chicken, rabbit eyes, and noncadaveric model eyes).…”

“…Approximately half of the residents felt that the training had fully prepared them to perform strabismus surgery. 133 In 2 other studies, checklist tools were devised using content experts to establish face and content validity. These tools are intended for documentation of residents’ training progress and the effectiveness of the training experience.…”

“…This is further compounded by the emotional state of the trainee; one survey of ophthalmology residents found poor recall of learning due to anxiety from conventional operative strabismus surgery teaching experience, which resulted in a negative performance (24% reporting tremor, 11% had tachycardia, 10% moments of absence and 34% felt nervous) (ref. 7).…”
