Show more

“…The Snellen chart is the universally accepted method for measuring visual acuity, a screening tool for detecting poor vision. The test consists of reading images aloud (i.e., letters, and numbers arranged in eight horizontal lines); visual acuity is considered to be the lowest line on the chart on which the individual is able to "read" all images correctly (Zapparoli et al, 2009). Corrective lenses are allowed in the non-specific clinic.…”

“…Inclusion criteria for participants with PD were: (a) a positive diagnosis of idiopathic PD according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) (Goetz et al, 2008), (b) a score <3 on the Hoehn and Yahr PD stage scale (Hoehn & Yahr, 1967;Goetz et al, 2004), (c) active current use of anti-Parkinsonian medication, and (d) no evidence of other neurological, musculoskeletal, or cardiovascular disorders. Patients were excluded if they received any treatment with deep brain stimulation or had any of the following neurological conditions: (a) history of vestibular symptoms or vestibular disease (Dix-Hallpike and/or supine roll test positive) (Dix & Hallpike, 1952) (Folstein et al, 1975) (c) severe visual accuracy impairment (Snellen visual acuity evaluation < 80) (Zapparoli et al, 2009), (d) stroke history, peripheral neuropathy, or cervical dystonia by medical records investigation. The elderly control group followed the same exclusion criteria for neurological conditions as the individuals with PD.…”
