Motor Competence in Children With and Without Ambliopia

The purpose of this study was to assess the motor competence of children with and without amblyopia. Study participants were 165 primary school children, aged 6–9 years, divided into three groups based on their visual acuity with the Snellen chart: (a) non-amblyopia, (b) corrected amblyopia, and (c) non-corrected amblyopia. We assessed the children’s motor competence with the Motor Competence Assessment battery (MCA) and their physical activity with the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). The non-amblyopia group presented significantly better motor competence on the MCA than either the corrected amblyopia group or the non-corrected amblyopia group; there were no statistically significant motor differences between the two amblyopia subgroups. Amblyopia versus non-amblyopia differences on the MCA were mainly in stability and locomotor components, involving dynamic balance and the change of spatial position and direction of movement, but not in the manipulative component (ball throwing velocity and ball kicking velocity). Predictably, from within an integrated visual motor perspective of child development, our findings suggest that intact vision played an important role in children’s motor competence. The development of fundamental motor skills, especially of stability and locomotor skills, may be affected by poor visual processing in that participants with uncorrected amblyopia showed poor movement accuracy, uncoordinated movement, and impaired balance.

“…Inclusion criteria for participants with PD were: (a) a positive diagnosis of idiopathic PD according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) (Goetz et al, 2008), (b) a score <3 on the Hoehn and Yahr PD stage scale (Hoehn & Yahr, 1967;Goetz et al, 2004), (c) active current use of anti-Parkinsonian medication, and (d) no evidence of other neurological, musculoskeletal, or cardiovascular disorders. Patients were excluded if they received any treatment with deep brain stimulation or had any of the following neurological conditions: (a) history of vestibular symptoms or vestibular disease (Dix-Hallpike and/or supine roll test positive) (Dix & Hallpike, 1952) (Folstein et al, 1975) (c) severe visual accuracy impairment (Snellen visual acuity evaluation < 80) (Zapparoli et al, 2009), (d) stroke history, peripheral neuropathy, or cervical dystonia by medical records investigation. Acute Effects of a Haptic Anchor System on Postural Sway of Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease: A Preliminary Study

Some investigators have demonstrated that an anchor system can improve postural control in elderly persons during balance tasks, but none have reported on the use of this approach in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of an anchor system on postural sway in elderly individuals with ( n = 13) and without ( n = 14) PD. In this cross-sectional study, we measured postural sway with a force platform based on the Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction of Balance (CTSIB). We calculated center of pressure (COP) parameters, as a function of time, based on the ellipse sway area (cm2) and evaluated self-efficacy for postural control based on the degree of difficulty in each task. With the anchor system (i.e., handheld ropes attached to weights on the floor), we observed a significant reduction in the ellipse sway area in the semi-tandem position among individuals with PD ( p = .04). For participants without PD, there was no significant difference in sway with or without the anchor system in all positions. Also, for participants with PD, there was an improvement in self-efficacy for postural control associated with the anchor system in several positions while there was only a self-efficacy improvement with the anchor system in the semi-tandem position for those without PD. Acute use of a haptic anchor system reduced postural sway in the semi-tandem position in individuals with PD, and the anchor system generally improved postural control self-efficacy for body sway in individuals with PD.

Doenças Oculares Mais Comuns Que Afetam Crianças E Adolescentes Atendidas Em Um Centro De Atendimento Em Curitiba/Pr

O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar as doenças oculares mais comuns que afetam crianças e adolescentes de um Centro de Atendimento em Educação Especial em Curitiba/PR. Metodologicamente, utilizou-se a pesquisa descritiva e ex-post factual, que foi constituída por 224 adolescentes (125 meninos e 99 meninas), com idades entre 6 a 17 anos, que apresentavam patologias oculares. Para verificar as doenças mais comuns foram apreciados os prontuários dos avaliados, além dos dados sociodemográficos (idade e sexo). Para análise dos dados realizou-se a estatística descritiva com cálculo das frequências absoluta/relativa e intervalos de confiança (IC) de 95%. Para a análise univariada foi realizado o teste Exato de Fisher. O nível de significância utilizado como parâmetro foi o de 5%. Como resultado, observou-se que o estrabismo (p= 0,02) e a palidez papilar (p= 0,02) são as doenças que mais acometem a amostra estudada. Como conclusão, constatou-se que as doenças oculares mais comuns (significativas) que afetam crianças e adolescentes são o estrabismo e a palidez da papila.Palavras Chave: Adolescentes. Baixa Visão.
