Abstract: Patients and methods: sCT was measured before thyroidectomy in 494 patients with nodular disease who had no family history of MTC or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, and no cytological suspicion of MTC. Results: Basal sCT was < 10 ng/mL in 482 patients and none of them had MTC. One patient with basal sCT > 100 pg/mL had MTC. Among the 11 patients with basal sCT between 10 and 100 pg/mL, MTC was diagnosed in only one. The two patients with MTC were submitted to total thyroidectomy, combined with elective ly… Show more

“…This results in a frequency of 0.62%. Other series reported a frequency between 0.4%–1.37% [4569101112]. Different from the ATA's conflicting and unclear recommendations [7], the ETA consensus report clearly states that routine measurement of CT should be applied in the management of thyroid nodule cases, since it is more sensitive than FNAB [13].…”

“…The finding of elevated serum CT modifies the extent of the surgery, from total-/hemithyroidectomy to total thyroidectomy, including central lymph node clearance. The objective behind this philosophy is that this approach enables effective treatment even after the first intervention [9]. …”

“…Several studies have assessed the utility of serum (basal and stimulated) calcitonin for early diagnosis of sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in patients with thyroid nodules (19)(20)(21)(22). However, the interpretation of calcitonin (basal and stimulated) results and the cost-benefit ratio are controversial and may be more interesting in patients who have small nodules and are over 40 years of age (21).…”

“…Yüksek kalsitonin düzeyleri, medüller tiroid kanserleri için sensitif bir markır olmakla birlikte, spesifik değildir. Çünkü hiperparatiroidizm, renal yetmezlik ve nöroendokrin tümörler gibi bazı tiroid dışı patalojilerinde ve bazı ilaçların kulanımında da (omeprazol, glukokortikoidler, beta-blokerler, glukagon gibi) kalsitonin düzeylerinin yükselebildiği bilinmektedir [17,18].…”
