Abstract: Objectives: To compare salivary with serum total cortisol in patients with severe sepsis, postoperative patients and healthy controls. Materials and methods: Serum total cortisol was determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay; salivary cortisol was determined by enzyme immunoassay. Results: In patients with severe sepsis, median concentration of salivary cortisol was 14.0 and 2.6 higher than that of postoperative patients and healthy subjects. In postoperative patients, salivary cortisol was 5.4 times higher … Show more

“…It is difficult to compare the salivary cortisol levels of critically ill patients. There is a more than 6-fold difference in mean salivary cortisol levels of patients with severe sepsis [12,13]. The salivary cortisol levels of the mechanically ventilated patients in this study were higher than the levels found in the general critically ill population [14] but lower than the levels of patients with severe sepsis [12,13,15].…”

“…In the present study, salivary cortisol levels in controls were 0.13–0.26 μg/dL. Eguia-del Valle et al , in 2013,[22] Albanidou-Farmaki et al , in 2008,[23] and Mello et al , in 2011,[24] in their studies reported salivary cortisol levels of 0.25–1.09 μg/dL, 0.35–1.47 μg/dL, and 0.30–3.20 μg/dL, respectively, in controls. This variation could be attributed to the varying populations and methodologies used.…”
