Abstract: INTRODUCTIONC linically nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPA) are usually diagnosed due to compressive symptoms, most typically visual field abnormalities, headache and hypopituitarism. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in patients with NFPA is highly prevalent both at diagnosis and after conventional treatment with pituitary surgery and/or radiotherapy (1-5). Untreated hypogonadism decreases patient quality of life and fertility and increases cardiovascular risk (6-8).Male hypogonadal patients are usually trea… Show more

“…Also, in our study, decreased testosterone levels were accompanied by increased oxidative stress. (Karkoulias et al, 2008;Midzak, Chen, Papadopoulos, & Zirkin, 2009;Ribeiro & Abucham, 2011). Also, it was shown that the state of LH levels that does not reflect testosterone decreases might be related to the inhibition of LH pulsatility and/or testosterone/androgen synthesis by the drugs administered (Ribeiro & Abucham, 2011).…”

“…After CC therapy was discontinued, he was subsequently treated with testosterone cypionate, to which he did respond. Previous studies have also shown that a small percentage of men may develop a paradoxical decrease in testosterone while on CC, and in some this may be associated with an adverse effect on sperm morphology . Mazzola et al also studied men with hypogonadism on CC; their data showed that factors predictive of CC response (defined as increase in serum testosterone ≥ 200 ng/dL at ≥ 6 months) included mean testicular volume and LH level.…”

“…15 CC did not improve hypogonadism secondary to nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas previously treated with surgery in a case series of nine patients treated with CC 50 mg daily for 3 months. 22 Eight of the nine patients had a significant decrease in testosterone and no change in FSH or LH after treatment; semen parameters were not evaluated in this study. 22 In contrast, CC may have positive effects in men with prolactinomas with persistent hypogonadism following dopamine agonist therapy.…”
