Hipovitaminose D em adultos: entendendo melhor a apresentação de uma velha doença

Abstract: Vitamin D is synthesized in skin through a reaction mediated by sunlight, and it is metabolized to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, in liver, and in 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, in kidney. This last reaction has a tight feedback mechanism. 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D is the active hormone, and its actions are mediated mainly by nuclear receptors. Its major functions are in calcium metabolism and bone mass maintenance. Hypovitaminosis D, as a disease in adult people, manifests itself with hypocalcemia and secondary hyperparathyroi… Show more

“…The three groups in our study had inadequate serum levels of vitamin D, and even in the comparison group with IBS, 55% of the patients showed insufficient concentrations. Premaor et al 16 reported that serum vitamin D levels in both young and old adults varied by geographic region, depending on latitude, and were more appropriate near the equator. In the Curitiba area, due to its climatic characteristic of low annual insolation, there is a greater possibility of vitamin D deficiency, as already evaluated by other authors.…”

“…In the Curitiba area, due to its climatic characteristic of low annual insolation, there is a greater possibility of vitamin D deficiency, as already evaluated by other authors. 3,16 Regarding serum vitamin D levels, the importance of its replacement in patients with IBD has already been suggested, 17 since it has a relevant role in the health of this group of patients. In addition to the benefit in bone integrity, an improvement in the immune response is expected and, although not yet fully proven, aid in the prevention of colorectal cancer, a complication that can occur in patients with IBD.…”

“…Osteoporosis was found in 26.3% of 180 patients with vitamin D deficiency assessed by Silva et al 50 . A vitamin D deficiency is a situation that must be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of osteoporosis 41 . A disease caused by a deficiency in adults promotes hypocalcemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism with subsequent loss of trabecular bone and thinning of cortical bone, which leads to increased risk of fractures 41 .…”
