Influence of land use changes on water chemistry in streams in the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil

Abstract: Streamwater is affected by several processes in the watershed including anthropogenic activities that result in changes in water quality as well as in the functioning of these stream ecosystems. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the concentration of major ions (Ca ) in streams in the state of São Paulo (southeast Brazil). The sampling sites are located at undisturbed (ombrophilus dense forest, semideciduous forest and savanna -cerrado) and disturbed areas (pasture, urbanization and sugar cane crops). Strea… Show more

“…The observed values were below this limit, with the Recanto stream showing the highest mean value of 329.7 lS cm -1 , which was 231 and 62% higher than the means for the Pylles and Santa Angélica streams, respectively. Other studies of tributaries of the Piracicaba river crossing urbanized areas have reported mean electrical conductivities similar to or higher than those obtained here, with values of 597.5 lS cm -1 (Daniel et al 2002), 271.8 lS cm -1 (Ometo et al 2000), and 306.0 lS cm -1 (Silva et al 2012).…”

“…This range was also observed by Medeiros et al (2009) in the Recanto stream, upstream of sewage discharges from Nova Odessa, and by Silva et al (2012), Martinelli et al (1999), and Machado et al (2018) in streams of the PRB.…”

“…This condition will consequently cause a decrease of oxygen levels in the water and alter the habitat of aquatic organisms [5]. Moreover, disturbed areas also show higher nutrient transport in the rivers compared to forested watersheds [6].…”

“…Recently the AABC published some quite interesting papers on different kinds of pollution that occur in distinct areas (e.g., Lacerda et al 2012, Silva et al 2012, Fonseca et al 2013, Hermes et al 2013. Mkoma et al (2014) have studied major ion species in order to establish the degree in which the emission of pollutants have affected the atmosphere on the coast of the Baía de Todos os Santos, in Salvador, northeastern Brazil (Mkoma et al 2014).…”
