A new species of Sarax Simon, 1892 from the Philippines (Arachnida: Amblypygi: Charinidae)

Abstract: A new species of the genus Sarax Simon, 1892 is described from Panay Island, Philippines. Sarax curioi sp. n. is the second species of the genus from the country and can be distinguished from the other Philippine species (Sarax brachydactylus Simon, 1892) by the sclerotized granules of the pedipalp surface, the spines of the pedipalp distitibia, the number of denticles of the chelicerae claw and the shape of the denticles of the chelicerae basal segment. Sarax newbritainensis Rahmadi and Kojima, 2010 is newly … Show more

“…Despite the occurrence of the genus Charinus in Atlantic Forest environments, it has already been reported by Baptista & Giupponi (2002) and Pinto-da-Rocha et al (2002), this is the first record of the genus Charinus to the city of Salvador, since in previous works (Baptista & Giupponi, 2002, Giupponi & Kury, 2002 report the occurrence of this genus in Bahia associated only to the caves of The Serra do Ramalho in Carinhanha, Pedra do Sino in Santa Luzia and Encantados in Gentio do Ouro. Dias and Machado (2006) have found that amblypygids have a preference for large trees and suggest that human disturbance promoted by selective logging or forest degradation due to habitat fragmentation and edge effect may have a negative effect on the spatial distribution and therefore on the density of these animals.…”

“…n. are Phrynusexsul Harvey, 2002 found in caves on Flores Island, Indonesia (Harvey 2002), Charongrayi (Gervais, 1842), Charonoenpelli Harvey & West, 1998, and Catageusorientalis (Seiter & Wolff, 2017) found in the surrounding islands and in Australia (Harvey and West 1998; Seiter and Wolff 2017). The closest Sarax species is likely to be Saraxwilleyi Gravely, 1915 from West Papua Province in Indonesia (Giupponi and Miranda 2012), located 899.5 km away. Papua-New Guinea and West Papua are part of the Sahul shelf and bear two species of Sarax .…”
