Slope variation and population structure of tree species from different ecological groups in South Brazil

Abstract: Size structure and spatial arrangement of 13 abundant tree species were determined in a riparian forest fragment in (understory small trees species). Height and diameter structures and basal area of species were analyzed. Spatial patterns and slope correlation were analyzed by Moran's I spatial autocorrelation coefficient and partial Mantel test, respectively. The emergent and small understory species showed the highest and the lowest variations in height, diameter and basal area. Size distribution differed am… Show more

“…This probably explains the influence of the dominant grassland vegetation of the study area, which set the microclimate for herbaceous plants. It differs in describing positive relationships between slope and tree species (Bianchini et al., ). Slope is reported to be a key factor in determining the vegetation at a local scale (Kirkby et al., ), but it may not be a significant factor at the landscape or regional scale.…”

“…Aspect distributes the solar radiation affecting the microclimate and vegetation at a local scale (Kirkby et al, 1990). Slope correlates with the spatial pattern of tree species by controlling solar radiation (Bianchini, Garcia, Pimenta, & Torezan, 2010).…”

“…As several authors have pointed out before, resource availability and divergent associations of habitat have a great influence during regeneration, reflecting wide ranges of vital rates among taxa (e.g., Wright et al 2003). Bianchini et al (2010) have studied the size structure and spatial arrangement of 13 different kinds of trees that were abundant in a riparian forest fragment located in the Paraná State. The main purpose of the research was to establish if the size and spatial structures differ among species groups and if the slope was related to the spatial distribution of the species.…”
