Several factors describe the broad pattern of diversity in plant species distribution. We explore these determinants of species richness in Western Himalayas using high‐resolution species data available for the area to energy, water, physiography and anthropogenic disturbance. The floral data involves 1279 species from 1178 spatial locations and 738 sample plots of a national database. We evaluated their correlation with 8‐environmental variables, selected on the basis of correlation coefficients and principal component loadings, using both linear (structural equation model) and nonlinear (generalised additive model) techniques. There were 645 genera and 176 families including 815 herbs, 213 shrubs, 190 trees, and 61 lianas. The nonlinear model explained the maximum deviance of 67.4% and showed the dominant contribution of climate on species richness with a 59% share. Energy variables (potential evapotranspiration and temperature seasonality) explained the deviance better than did water variables (aridity index and precipitation of the driest quarter). Temperature seasonality had the maximum impact on the species richness. The structural equation model confirmed the results of the nonlinear model but less efficiently. The mutual influences of the climatic variables were found to affect the predictions of the model significantly. To our knowledge, the 67.4% deviance found in the species richness pattern is one of the highest values reported in mountain studies. Broadly, climate described by water–energy dynamics provides the best explanation for the species richness pattern. Both modeling approaches supported the same conclusion that energy is the best predictor of species richness. The dry and cold conditions of the region account for the dominant contribution of energy on species richness.

-(Structure of the tree component in montane tropical rain forest in the Parque Natural Municipal Nascentes de Paranapiacaba (PNMNP), Santo André, São Paulo State, Brazil). It was performed a phytosociological analysis of two 0.5 hectare plots (P1 and P2) of tropical montane rain forest in the PNMNP. Trees with DBH (diameter at breast height) of 4.8 cm or more were sampled, a total of 1,992 individuals belonging to 183 species, 103 genera and 49 families. Most of the species are zoochoric and the number of pioneer and non-pioneer individuals is similar in the two plots. The Myrtaceae family was the richest in species number, followed by Rubiaceae, Lauraceae and Melastomataceae. The specific diversity was obtained by the Shannon's Index (H'), 3.779 in P1 and 4.049 in P2 and the equability by Pielou's Index (J), 0.770 in P1 and 0.836 in P2. The diversity indexes found in PNMNP are similar to those ones found in other protected areas in the State of São Paulo and may indicate that the air pollutants produced by the industrial complex of Cubatão were not so deleterious as in other surrounding areas in the Mogi river valey and Reserva Biológica do Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba. Furthermore, the presence of big trees belonging to non-pioneer species in P2 indicates that PNMNP may keep relicts of the original forest that covered the area in the past. Foi realizada a análise fitossociológica de duas parcelas (P1 e P2) de 0,5 hectare em Floresta Ombrófila Densa Montana do PNMNP . Foram amostradas as árvores com DAP (diâmetro a 1,30 m de altura do solo) ≥ 4,8 cm, num total de 1.992 indivíduos, distribuídos em 183 espécies, 103 gêneros e 49 famílias, sendo a maioria delas zoocórica, com uma distribuição equilibrada de indivíduos pioneiros e não pioneiros em P1 e P2. A família Myrtaceae foi a mais rica em espécies, seguida de Rubiaceae, Lauraceae e Melastomataceae. A diversidade específica foi obtida através do Índice de Shannon (H'), sendo 3,779 em P1 e 4,049 em P2 e a equabilidade pelo Índice de Pielou (J), sendo 0,770 em P1 e 0,836 em P2. Os índices de diversidade encontrados no PNMNP são semelhantes aos de outras Unidades de Conservação do Estado de São Paulo, uma indicativa de que os poluentes atmosféricos produzidos pelo complexo industrial de Cubatão certamente não foram aí tão prejudiciais quanto para áreas próximas localizadas no vale do rio Mogi e Reserva Biológica do Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba. Além disso, a presença de árvores de grande porte pertencentes a espécies não pioneiras na P2 indica que o PNMNP pode ainda manter relictos da floresta original que recobria a região no passado. The impact factor of the Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (AABC) has increased significantly over the last years, reaching for the first time a value above one (ISI-Thomson 2009, 1.074). This clearly shows the growing impact of this journal in the development of science worldwide, which is expected to increase further in the years ahead.Among the interesting studies published in this issue of the AABC that should be highlighted is the work on the primary and secondary thickening in the stem of a monocotyledon species by Marina B. Cattai and Nanuza L. de Menezes from the Instituto de Biociências of the Universidade de São Paulo. There is still great discussion over how this thickening occurs in this major group of flowering plants. The debate on this subject started in the nineteenth century and is nowadays centered in the notion of a "primary thickening meristem" (PTM, for a review see Rudall 1991). Addressing this question, Cattai and Menezes (2010) determined how primary growth takes place in Cordyline fruticosa, also popularly known as cabbage palm, and how it affects the secondary thickening meristem. The authors have essentially based their study on histological cross-sections of specimens original from Asia, collected from the garden of the Instituto de Biociências. Still regarding plants, Edmilson Bianchini of the Centro de Ciências Biológicas of the Universidade Estadual deLondrina and colleagues provided new information that can help our understanding of the tree species ecology of what remains from the Atlantic Forest. The main purpose of the research was to establish if the size and spatial structures differ among species groups and if the slope was related to the spatial distribution of the species. Their main results indicate that niche differentiation is most likely a fundamental factor with high influence on the way that the tree community is structured.Moving from land to sea, it has been observed that seagrass beds are used by several species of fishes for protection and food supply. Nonetheless, there is a need to quantify the role these ecosystems play as a refuge for species living in reefs and estuaries (Adams and Ebersole 2002), particularly when these regions are close to heavily populated areas and therefore subject to great influence by human impact.
