Uptake of iron from different compounds by enteroinvasive Escherichia coli

Abstract: This work aimed the study of acquisition of iron from different compounds by EIEC strains. Seven serotypes were studied (O28ac.H -, O29:H -, O136:H -, O144:H -, O152:H -, O164:H -and O167:H7 -), in a total of 31 strains. All serotypes were able to use distinct iron sources: hemin, hematin, hemoglobin, ovotransferin, lactoferrin, transferrin and ferritin.

“…Contrary to what it found for the ability of EIEC to use iron compounds (8), the pattern of expression of IROMPs is serotype-specific. We investigated the regulation of expression of the major IROMP by growing the cells in iron-replete medium and ironlimited medium, separating their outer membranes and subjecting them to SDS-PAGE.…”

“…HLf is probably a relevant source of iron for EIEC, due to its presence in gastrointestinal mucosal surfaces. In a study performed in our laboratory, several EIEC strains were able to use HLf (8). We investigated the binding of HLf to outer membrane receptors and two bands (39 and 43 kDa) showed binding specificity to HLf, and neither was iron-regulated.…”

“…Overall, the proportions of isolates that were capable of using haemoglobin and haemoglobin-haptoglobin were 80 and 63 %, respectively. Utilization of haemoglobin, transferrin and lactoferrin has also been reported previously (Law et al, 1992;Dall'Agnol & Martinez, 1999). E. coli was considered to be incapable of using the haemoglobin-haptoglobin complex (Eaton et al, 1982, Helms et al, 1984; however, the uropathogenic strain CFT073, which possesses multiple iron-uptake systems, can use this complex (Torres et al, 2001).…”

“…It was shown that EIEC has a high adaptability, using, if necessary, the iron capture system that consumes less energy. The ability to capture Fe from different sources can facilitate the development of infectious processes by this bacterium 412, 413…”
