Antagonism Against Vibrio Cholerae by Bacterial Diffusible Compound in the Fecal Microbiota of Rodents

Abstract: In an ex vivo agar plate assay, we monitored the appearance of an inhibitory halo against Vibrio cholerae from the feces of Wistar and Fischer rats aged 10 to 42 days. The frequency of Wistar rats showing halo increased from 0% (10 days) to a maximum of 80.0% (29 days) and then decreased to 53.3% (42 days). A similar pattern was obtained with Fischer rats but with a lower intensity (maximum frequency of 50.0% by day 36). In a separate experiment, when Wistar rats were fed a low-protein diet for 7 days, the inh… Show more

“…However, there was no correlation between the presence of these parasitic protozoans and worms and the formation of an inhibitory halo against V. cholerae. The frequency of inhibitory halo was 20.6% in the whole group and, as expected, was much lower than the frequency (85%) found with rodent faeces [7]. An apparently (p 0.079) higher percentage (27.3%) was observed in the age range 20± 40 years when compared with the age range 4±19 years (10.7%), but not (p 0.385) when compared with the range 41±61 years (20.0%).…”

“…Champevolier et al (1993) have studied on the macrolides used in the treatment of cholera in children. The antagonistic activity of bacterial diffusible against V. cholerae compound in the fecal microbiota of rodents was reported (Da Silva et al 1998). The antibiotic causes certain side effects.…”
